This Weekend: A guide to the games still going ahead.

This Weekend: A guide to the games still going ahead.

Despite all the postponements and all the suspended leagues around the world we still want to get you your football fix this weekend. If there’s any sort of action going on out there, we’ve found it and we’ve collected it all together in this article.

In what follows, you’ll find links to every league mentioned. Those will take you straight to the relevant page in the app where you’ll be able to hit the star icon to favourite the league, or click the bell to set your alerts for all the key matches.

??????? Non-League Football in England.

There are games at Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the English non-league game following a FA mandate to allow each level of the pyramid to decide whether to carry on playing.

Consequently, we have coverage of all the key games in the National League, including the league leaders Barrow at home against Wrexham, and important home games for two of the chasing pack; Notts County vs. Eastleigh and Yeovil Town, who welcome Barnet to Huish Park.

Dropping a level, you’ll forgive us for having an eye on the fortunes of Hampton & Richmond Borough in the National League South. We’re the main shirt sponsors at the club this season and as such, we’ll be backing The Beavers as they take on Oxford City.

There’s a big game in the Northern League Premier as well, where two of the best supported clubs happen not only to be sitting 1st and 2nd in the table, but also playing each other today – South Shields vs. FC United.

?? Turkish Super Lig.

It’s a busy weekend in Turkey’s top flight – the Super Lig, with the games due on Sunday looking particularly juicy.

The top two, separated by goal difference go head-to-head with Trabzonspor hosting İstanbul Başakşehir plus there’s a massive derby between Galatasaray and Beşiktaş.

?? Brazilian State Championships.

At this time of year, the various State Championships are in full flow in the home of the beautiful game.

The all-conquering Flamengo, winners of both the Brasileiro and Copa Libertadores last year will be playing against lower league, Portuguesa.

Whilst in another part of the country São Paolo, including a certain Dani Alves in their ranks will play against near-neighbours, Santos.

?? Russian Premier League.

To the east, reigning Russian Premier League champions and current leaders, Zenit St. Petersburg face Ural at the Gazprom Arena. And there’s also an intriguing match between 3rd and 4th as Rostov play Lokomotiv Moscow.

?? Liga MX

We’re only in Round 10 of the Clausura in Mexico’s Liga MX, but the weekend’s biggest game is probably the clash between two of the early pacesetters, León (2nd) vs. Pumas UNAM (4th).

?? Copa de la Superliga in Argentina.

The main league season ended in a typically crazy fashion last weekend in Argentina and now, just a week later all of the same top flight sides start another shorter tournament – the Copa de La Superliga.

River Plate threw away the league title by drawing at Atlético Tucumán, allowing arch-rivals Boca Juniors to steal the title on the final day. And who do River play this week? You’ve guessed it, it’s Tucumán!

Boca meanwhile, travel to Godoy Cruz – probably still on a high after the drama of last weekend.

?? A-League & W-League action in Australia.

In the men’s top flight, the A-League league leaders, Sydney FC will be looking to maintain their impressive momentum against Perth Glory (5th).

And in the W-League, the top 4 women’s teams in the country will contest the championship semi-finals.

?? Saudi Kings Cup

It’s also semi-final time in Saudi Arabia’s leading cup competition, the Kings Cup.

In the first semi-final, Reigning AFC Champions League holders Al Hilal take on the surprise side in this competition, Abha Club. And the winners will go on to face the victor from the heavyweight clash between Al Ahli and Al Nassr.

?? Indian Super League Final

We’re one step further along in the Indian Super League, where the grand final is set to go ahead this weekend. The teams who finished 2nd and 4th in the regular season have got through the play-offs and now face each other to decide the champions – ATK vs. Chennaiyin FC, who are managed by Owen Coyle.

If that wasn’t enough to keep you going though, don’t worry there is all of this as well!

?? Algeria – Ligue 1

?? Argentina – Primera B Nacional and Primera B Metropolitana & Torneo Federal A

?? Azerbaijan – Premier League

?? Bolivia – Primera Division

?? Chile – Primera Division

?? Costa Rica – Primera Division

?? Ecuador – Serie A

?? El Salvador – Primera Division

?? Guatemala – Liga Nacional

?? Honduras – Liga Nacional

?? Hungary – NB I

?? India – I-League

?? Indonesia – Liga 1

?? Kazakhstan – Premier League

?? Malaysia – Super Liga

?? Mexico – Ascenso MX

?? Morocco – Botola Pro

?? Nigeria – NPFL

?? Russia – 1. Division

?? Serbia – Super Liga

?? Singapore – S.League

??  Turkey – 1. Lig

?? Ukraine – Premier League

?? UAE – Arabian Gulf League

?? Uruguay – Primera Division

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

Time for our weekly look ahead to the weekend in World Football. Remember, if there’s a big game happening anywhere, you’ll hear about it first from the FotMob matches tab.

? Friday Night

There’s plenty to get yourself stuck into tonight!

??????? In the ever unpredictable EFL Championship, Nottingham Forest (4th) meet Millwall (10th). The hosts have just one win in five but pick up another here and they’ll go third, just about keeping in touch with the top two in the race for the automatic promotion places.

?? Kickstarting the weekend in La Liga, Valencia (7th) travel to Deportivo Alavés (13th). After another turbulent season at the Mestalla, Valencia might have one eye on saving next week’s Champions League game vs. Atalanta, where they need to turn around a 4-1 deficit. That could just play in to the hands of the home side in this one.

Did you know… None of the last 10 games between Alavés and Valencia have ended in a draw (Alavés W2, Valencia W8) with the last draw between them in La Liga coming in December 2002.

?? One of our favourite leagues, the USL Championship returns for the start of its 2020 season on Friday night. Officially the second tier of football in the United States, the league is home to an array of interesting teams and stories, such as US legend Tim Howard, already co-owner and sporting director at Memphis 901 FC announcing this week, that he is coming out of retirement to play for his own team!

The season begins with two games in the Western Conference – El Paso Locomotive (see, great team name!) go to Orange County SC and Tacoma Defiance (again, great name!) host Reno 1868.

? Saturday

??????? ‘Crisis club’ Liverpool look to get back on track.

Following a week in which the Premier League champions-elect lost both their first league game of the campaign and got knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea, there seemed to be some media speculation that the club is in crisis! The facts remain the same though, Liverpool start Saturday’s EPL action against AFC Bournemouth looking for one of the final four wins they need to lift their first title in 30 years.

Elsewhere, West Ham United look to extend their mini-revival at Arsenal and in the late game, Tottenham need to bounce back from their recent troubles, when they go to Burnley.

? Road trip with the Beavers.

Lower down the English football pyramid on Saturday, we’ll be giving a bit back to the brilliant fans of the club that we sponsor in the National League South, Hampton and Richmond Borough.

As a thank you for their support home and away this season, we’re taking a coach load of fans on an away day to watch their team, Hampton face promotion hopefuls, Havant and Waterlooville. Check out our social media over the weekend, for coverage of this one.

?? Superliga title on the line in Argentina.

The league season comes to a head in Argentina on Saturday with the countries most famous and eternal rival clubs fighting it out for the title, in the very last round of games!

River Plate hold a one point advantage but still need a win at Atlético Tucumán (14th). Slip up at all and Boca Juniors could take advantage with a victory over Gimnasia La Plata (19th).

Boca’s opponents are of course, managed by one of their former heroes, Diego Maradona but with his current side very much threatened by relegation he may be in no mood to help out!

?? Borussen pride at stake in the Bundesliga.

Not rivals geographically, but still very much rivals on the pitch Saturday’s headline game in Germany is the clash between the two sides who sport Borussia in their name!

Mönchengladbach (3rd) host Dortmund (4th) with both teams knowing a win will keep their outside changes of the title alive for another week.

Much depends of course, on the form of the teams around them and second placed, Leipzig kick off earlier in the day at Werder Bremen.

? Sunday

??????? The Manchester Derby.

No prizes for guessing Sunday’s big game in the Premier League as the two Manchester clubs meet at Old Trafford.

United (5th) have already lost to City (2nd) in the league and the League Cup this season, but this one is about pride. For City, fresh off the back of their triumph in the Carabao Cup Final, another victory here would kick off a period of 10 days that could define their season. In that period they also face Arsenal in the League, and host Real Madrid for the second leg of their all-important Champions League R16 tie.

Did you know… Manchester United have lost their last three home games against Manchester City in all competitions – they have only lost four against them consecutively once before, between January 1926 and February 1931!

?? Can Madrid stick it out at the top?

Speaking of Real Madrid, they will go to Real Betis on Sunday night knowing exactly what they need to do to either retain top spot, or return to the summit of La Liga. That’s because Barcelona play on Saturday and their next nearest rivals are already 10 points adrift.

?? Serie A returns, behind closed doors.

We should see a full programme of league fixtures in Italy this weekend as the European country, worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak gets to grips with the spread of the infection.

All matches have been ordered to be played in empty stadiums, and it was announced mid-week that the scheduled games have been pushed back to allow last weekend’s postponed matches to be played instead. That means the game to look out for will be in Turin, where Juventus (2nd) host Inter (3rd) in a massive clash at the top of the table.

?? Derby Day in Lima.

You know we’re massive fans of a South American derby so forgive us for drawing your attention to another big match – this time, the meeting between Lima’s big two, Universitario and Alianza.

These clubs have been at it since the very first meeting between them, in 1928! Alianza had five players sent off in what proved to be a surprise victory for Universitario that also saw violence break out in the stands.

?? Slavia vs. Sparta in Prague.

There’s a derby too, in the Czech Republic where the countries two most successful sides face each other at Slavia’s Sinobo Stadium.

The hosts currently top of the table, enjoying a 23 point lead on their rivals, Sparta down in 7th but as always, there will be no love lost between them – as you can see from this film, when our favourite vlogger, Ellis went to the earlier game this season.

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

We’re starting this week’s preview of the weekend in world football especially early, essentially because there’s so much to fit in!

? Thursday

Technically due to be played in the early hours of Friday morning in Europe, where we are based, but prime time Thursday evening in the US, we wanted to give a heads up to a big game in the SheBelieves Cup.

Four-time World Champions, the USWNT play last year’s tournament winners, England in Orlando, Florida. Our friends at the excellent podcast, Two Girls Talk Balls have billed this one as a ‘clash of Amazonian proportions!’ ?

You can read more of their preview for the game here.

? Friday Night

Skipping forward 24 hours, there’s plenty to get stuck in to on Friday evening.

Top Five Goals from the Weekend

Top Five Goals from the Weekend

We’ve gathered together the best goals that we’ve seen over the last couple of days and collected them all here for you to watch at your leisure.

?? Dundalk’s Jordan Flores breaks the internet with an amazing volley in the League of Ireland.

?? Nikolai Topor-Stanley scores the perfect rocket for A-League club, Newcastle Jets.

?? Óscar Romero finds that perfect kiss off the crossbar with his free-kick in San Lorenzo’s league game in Argentina.

?? LAFC’s Carlos Vela lights up the first weekend of the MLS season with a fantastic solo goal.

?? Former French international, André Gignac completes a hat-trick for his Liga MX club, Tigres UANL with a stunning overhead kick.

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

There is a lot of football this weekend so here’s our attempt to condense the next 72 hours in the life of the FotMob Matches tab down to bite-size chunks for you to digest, at your leisure.

? Friday Night.

As a warm-up for what’s to come, how about these tasty looking appetisers.

??????? The Premier League’s bottom side, Norwich City take on Leicester City (3rd) in what should be an important game for both sides. Leicester will look to cement their Champions League aspirations whilst Norwich need to cut the 7 point gap from themselves to that all-important 17th place.

Did you know… After a run of nine consecutive Premier League home game in which they conceded at least two goals, Norwich have shipped just twice across their last three at Carrow Road (W1, D1, L1).

?? In La Liga, the resurgent Real Sociedad host Real Vallalodid, owned of course by the original Ronaldo. Fired on by their Scandinavian duo, Martin Ødegaard and Alexander Isak, La Real are looking up at the moment with a European place a distinct possibility.

? In Africa, the CAF Champions League has reached the Quarter Finals stages and there are two big games tonight. First, Egyptian giants Zamalek go up against the current holders, Espérance of Tunisia before Raja Casablanca, from Morocco play TP Mazembe, the most decorated side in the Congo.

After Zamalek’s request to postpone the Cairo Derby against Al Ahly due to be played earlier in the week was denied, they then failed to show up and therefore forfeited that game. That’s how seriously they’re taking the Champions League. ?

? Saturday

?? The 25th MLS season kicks off.

The top league in the United States is going all out for this special anniversary season, even dragging in Hollywood film score composer, Hans Zimmer to produce them a theme tune!

The action on the pitch gets underway with 8 games on Saturday, including the inaugural match for new expansion side, Nashville who start against 2018 champions, Atlanta United. Those awaiting a first look at David Beckham’s Inter Miami side will have to wait until Sunday night when they travel to LAFC.

??????? Liverpool closing in on EPL title.

The current Club World Cup champions head to Watford in Saturday’s late kick-off in the Prem. Honing in on their first English league triumph in the Premier League era, Liverpool need just four more wins – regardless of what points their nearest rivals, Man City and Leicester pick up over the remainder of the season.

The day also starts with one of those league rivalries that only seems to make sense in the English game as Crystal Palace travel to not-so-near neighbours, Brighton & Hove Albion.

?? Bayern and Dortmund both in action in Germany.

The Bundesliga’s biggest clubs continue their respective tilts at the title on Saturday. Bayern go to Hoffenheim looking to strengthen that grip on what would be a thirtieth Meisterschale trophy whilst a win for Dortmund, when they entertain Freiburg would see them move second, above RB Leipzig at least for 24 hours.

?? Top two meet in Poland.

You can add the Polish Ekstraklasa to the list of exciting European title races you’ve been looking for this year! Just 8 points separates the current top six and on Saturday night, the top two face each other in Warsaw as second place, Cracovia look to close the gap on leaders, Legia.

?? The Soweto Derby.

South Africa’s biggest rivalry is set for another edition on Saturday afternoon as Orlando Pirates clash with Kaizer Chiefs at a sold out Soccer City.

The game pits 3rd against 1st and if this video doesn’t get you hyped for it, we don’t know what will.

? Sunday

?? El Clásico.

It’s the biggest game in world football and will therefore dominate proceedings for us on Sunday. Real Madrid go in their home game with Barcelona knowing that a win will take them back to the top of La Liga, at the expense of Barça and go some way to decide the destination of the title.

With both sides showing some unfamiliar frailties during the campaign, and suffering perhaps surprising results in the Champions League this week, whoever comes out on top in this one will look to use it as a springboard for the rest of their season.

?? The big game in Serie A.

With the Italian football calendar heavily disrupted by the outbreak of coronavirus in the northern half of the country, this weekend’s schedule could look a little different by Sunday.

But, if all goes to plan – we’ll have the spectacle of Juventus versus Inter being played behind closed doors in Turin. It will be a strange atmosphere for a game of such magnitude, perhaps increasing the tension as both sides look to keep up the pace at the top of the table.

Going into the weekend, Juve sit top with Inter third but that might be different by kick-off as second place Lazio play on Saturday.

??????? Silverware on the line in England.

The final of the League Cup, between Aston Villa and Manchester City takes place at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

City are looking to make it a hat-trick of wins in this competition, with Pep Guardiola always taking what is England’s 3rd most important domestic trophy relatively seriously. Villa have a proud record of Cup wins themselves, albeit the last of their 5 titles came back in 1996.

?? Le Derby in Southern France.

Generally, the Derby Rhône-Alpes between Lyon and Saint Etienne goes off! Not as well known as other derbies in Ligue 1 but guaranteed to be as intense as anything you’ll see in the French game, these games are always worth looking out for.

Here’s a clip from their last meeting to give you some idea of what to expect. ?

?? It’s all going on in the Eredivisie.

Lastly, Sunday looks like being a great day in the Dutch top flight as the top four all play one another. Firstly, there’s PSV Eindhoven (4th) versus Feyenoord (3rd), also known as De Kraker (great name!) followed swiftly by Ajax’s (1st) home game against AZ Alkmaar (2nd) in Amsterdam. AZ could go level on points with their opponents to tighten what already looks like a congested league table.

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

As usual, we’ve delved deep into the app to bring you a preview of all the essential, and non-essential football you need to know about over the coming weekend. If there’s a key match going on somewhere in the world, you’ll hear about it here first!

? Friday Night.

Tuck into our pick of tonight’s games, with action in most of Europe’s big leagues there must something here that whets your appetite.

?? Bundesliga leaders, Bayern München are perhaps the biggest draw of the night, with their game against SC Paderborn brought forward thanks to their Champions League commitments in the coming week.

They of course, play Chelsea in the Round of 16 but before that, they will hope for a somewhat easier ride at the Allianz Arena against the league’s bottom side.

Did you know… Bayern have scored 12 goals in the opening 15 minutes of Bundesliga games this season – a league high. Paderborn, on the other hand have let in 13 goals in the opening quarter of an hour, more than any other side.

?? Before that game kicks-off though, we’ve highlighted the game between Sivasspor (4th) and Alanyaspor (5th) in the Turkish top flight.

Sivasspor were top going into last week’s games but after a disastrous set of results, in a congested league table they slipped 3 places in a matter of days. They’ll look to get back on track at home tonight.

After interesting fixtures in Serie A, the English Championship and Ligue 1, amongst others, we think you should end your day with a derby!

?? The Clásico Paceńo is the clash between the two big sides in the Bolivian capital of La Paz and sees the country’s most decorated team, Bolívar take on their nearest rivals, The Strongest.

? Saturday

??????? After what’s felt like months where we’ve had to make do with one random Premier League fixture here and a token rearranged game there, the EPL finally returns to normal this weekend.

In reality, it’s been the shortest Winter Break on record but whatever!

Today starts at 100mph with a heated London derby at Stamford Bridge where Frank Lampard’s Chelsea host rivals Spurs, now managed of course by Chelsea hero of old, José Mourinho.

And there’s the prospect of an entertaining game in the late kick-off as Leicester City (3rd) take on Manchester City (2nd). We’re calling it the ‘Best of the Rest Derby’, a term we fully expect no one else to adopt!

?? Following his heroics in the week, Erling Braut Haaland has now scored on his debut for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal AND Champions League.

See how our favourite Norwegian wonderkid gets on back in the Bundesliga today as Dortmund travel to Werder Bremen, who find themselves in the thick of a relegation battle.

?? In La Liga, there may only be four games today but we think most of the interest, at least from outside observers will be on these fixtures this weekend.

Barcelona play Basque side, Eibar at Camp Nou looking to match, or better Real Madrid’s result when they travel east to Valencia, where they face Levante.

Just one point separates the two traditional giants and with a 10-point gap opened up on third placed, Getafe it looks like we have another head-to-head battle for the La Liga title. It would be boring, but both sides have shown unlikely vulnerabilities this season and you never know when one of them might slip up!

?? In Argentina, two of the countries grand old clubs meet in Buenos Aires as San Lorenzo welcome Racing Club whilst Diego Maradona’s struggling Gimnasia play away at Racing’s Avellaneda neighbours, Independiente.

Elsewhere, Juventus headline the day in Serie A – they are on their travels to SPAL whilst in Turkey, new league leaders Trabzonspor face Besiktas in the big game in the Super Lig.

? Sunday

??????? Today is a busy one for Arsenal Football Club as the men’s team play Everton in the Premier League, whilst the women’s side have a FA Cup Round of 16 game against Lewes FC, the only club side in the world to pay their men’s and women’s teams equally.

And with Arsenal (3rd) busy elsewhere, there’s something of a title decider back in the WSL as league leaders Manchester City play the unbeaten Chelsea (2nd).

?? The Serie A fixture list looks particularly top heavy today, with virtually all of the sides challenging for both the title, and the European places in action.

Lazio travel to Genoa at lunchtime, Atalanta need to follow their Champions League heroics with a strong showing back at their normal home ground when they face Sassuolo and Inter will look to get back to winning ways after last weekend’s defeat, at Lazio, when they take on Sampdoria.

?? The new J. League season starts this weekend, but you’ll have to wait until today to see how defending champions, Yokohama F. Marinos kick-start their title defence.

Ange Postecoglou’s side smashed Sydney FC 4-0 in the Asian Champions League during the week so they’ll be high on confidence going into their game against Gamba Osaka.

?? There’s also an intriguing day in store, in Switzerland as the Super League’s top four are all in action against each other.

The reinvigorated, St. Gallen lead the table and they play Young Boys (2nd) at a sold-out Kybunpark whilst FC Basel (3rd) look to keep in touch when they go up against Servette (4th).

?? Lastly, it’s the big one in Paraguay as the countries top two teams meet in the Superclásico. And everyone, absolutely everyone wants to see the recently reunited, veteran strike partnership of Roque Santa Cruz and Emmanuel Adebayor start together for the first time at Olimpia.

Well, apart from fans of arch-rivals Cerro Porteno!

? Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

? Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

Time for your weekly insight into what’s going on in football over the weekend, direct from us here at the FotMob office. Key fixtures, derby games and the more obscure, you’ll find it all here.

? Valentine’s Day? More like Football Day.

It may be a day for romance in many parts of the world today, but nobody told the powers that when they were organising the fixtures. There’s a lot on today.

? The CAF SuperCup sees the winners of last season’s African Champions League and Confederations Cup meet in the now customary venue for these kind of showcase matches – Qatar.

The Zamalak fans were pretty excitable on Tuesday. Goodness knows what state they’re in now it’s actually match day!

?? In Austria, the other Bundesliga finally re-starts with a clash between the top two – RB Salzburg vs. LASK. Just two points separates the sides with third place, Rapid a further 10 points back. So for all intents and purposes, this is the title decider!

Salzburg have won 10 out of the last 13 titles, with the last 6 coming on the bounce so this could be a real chance for LASK to break that stranglehold.

??????? And you probably think we’re playing it down but there’s actually a Premier League match on today with Wolves taking on Leicester City in the midst of this winter break madness!

Did you know… Wolves have won both of their previous Premier League home games against Leicester, by a 4-3 scoreline each time.

And of course, there are matches in La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga this evening. We may be a little too invested in the game between Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt.

? Saturday

??????? Liverpool return to action today after their enforced break, made all the more political by Jürgen Klopp’s insistence that the first team didn’t feature in that FA Cup replay against Shrewsbury Town.

They go into today’s game at Norwich City knowing that just 6 more wins will guarantee them their first league title in the Premier League era. And look away now Norwich fans, but Liverpool have scored 4 or more against their opponents in 5 of their last 7 meetings.

If Liverpool lose their unbeaten record in this one, it will be a real upset.

?? With just 6 points splitting the top 5 in the Bundesliga, Saturday’s games will prove interesting. And the league table might get even more congested with current leaders, Bayern not playing until tomorrow.

Dortmund’s result on Friday could see them go second but should Leipzig win against Bremen, they’ll go one better and return to the top of the table. Gladbach, in 4th and Bayer Leverkusen, in 5th both have away games where they’ll be expecting to pick up points.

?? In La Liga, Barcelona have a rare afternoon kick-off as they welcome Getafe to Camp Nou looking to keep the pressure on Real Madrid in their own title battle. Getafe are, for many the surprise package in the league this season and they go into this game sitting in third, albeit 7 points behind Barça.

Did you know… Barcelona have won 21 of their last 23 La Liga home games, failing to score in only one of them… Which happened to be the one where the entire FotMob staff attended against Real Madrid in December 2019! ?

?? The League of Ireland, Premier Division kicks off it’s 2020 season this weekend, and it looks like it might start with a bang as it’s two biggest rivals meet today.

Bohemians vs. Shamrock Rovers is a derby that’s been going for over 100 years and divides the city of Dublin north to south. Keep an eye on our twitter feed because we’ll be sharing videos from the stands for this one!

????? Lastly, our local team SK Brann continue their pre-season preparations with a real test away at the home of Swedish champions, Djurgården. Sadly, we’re not going, but we’ll be there in spirit.

? Sunday

Today is a day for some of the league leaders around Europe’s top leagues to reassert themselves having watched those around them compete earlier in the weekend.

?? In Germany, Bayern München travel to FC Köln hoping that the hosts, and their legendary goal mascots are already in party mood ahead of the carnival season that has made the city famous, due to start next week.

?? Real Madrid will go into their game against Celta Vigo knowing what they need to do to maintain their lead at the top of La Liga against a side struggling for form this season. The Galicians sit just two points above the relegation places going into the weekend.

?? Traditionally the busiest day for football in Italy, Sunday is no exception with 6 Serie A games lined up.

With not a lot to choose between the top three, the game between Inter – top only on goal difference (in a league where ultimately, head-to-head records take precedence) and 3rd place, Lazio – the top scorers in the league will be massive. ?

Elsewhere, Juventus have a home game against relegation-threatened Brescia. Remember too, that Cristiano Ronaldo could equal the all-time Serie A record by scoring in his 11th straight league game.

??????? Today, it’s the turn of 4 more sides to return to action in the Premier League – Spurs travel to Aston Villa in the early kick-off before Arsenal play Newcastle United in the late game.

?? There’s also a special game in Romania, as the country’s Eternal Derby takes place between Dinamo And Steaua București. Not that we should call them that, after the bitter dispute between the current and previous owners of the club, the Romanian Army meant the club lost it’s name and colours… but kept their history and honours. Steaua are now officially known as FCSB.

?? Lastly, the Supercopa do Brasil will take place in Brasília, with this being just the 3rd time the country has held what elsewhere, is seen as the big season opener.

League champions Flamengo face Copo do Brasil winners, Athletico-PR for the relatively new honour. Both sides are of course deep in to the ongoing state championships, more traditional for this time of year – Athletico’s form looks a little patchy in theirs, whilst this week, Flamengo reached the 1st stage final in their part of the country.

Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

It’s Friday, you probably know the drill by now so let’s get to it – these are the matches around the world that we think you’ll be interested in this weekend!

? Your Friday Appetisers

Less of an appetiser for the days to come and more of a smörgåsbord this week, as we’ve picked out a little something for everyone from tonight’s football.

There’s action from some of Europe’s top leagues with games in Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 plus a chance to check in on Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht side, in the Belgian League.

?? His reign as manager is seemingly over, with him stepping down from match day duties to focus on playing whilst his assistant took charge but with the club sitting in 9th and that assistant now having quit the club, Kompany’s season is all kinds of trouble.

? In South America, there’s a crucial tie in the Argentine Superliga as title outsiders Argentinos Juniors and Lanús face off with both sides having the chance to go second in the table behind River Plate.

Oh, and yes – Argentinos Juniors do run out of an inflatable Diego Maradona.

?? In Brazil, the various state championships are in full swing at this time of year and in the Paulista, there’s a new-look team playing tonight.

Historic São Paulo club Bragantino have gotten the full Red Bull rebrand, with the energy drinks company taking control of the club last year they have only just now been allowed to change their name and colours.

?? A mention too, for 2. Bundesliga club, Dynamo Dresden – they might be bottom, with tonight’s game all-important but their army of fans have not given up, and are as committed as ever to the cause.

? Saturday

??????? The English Premier League is taking a somewhat piecemeal, winter break over the next two weekends with just a skeleton crew left to hold things together whilst the rest of the teams sit, sunning themselves on a beach somewhere.

So today, there’s just two fixtures – Everton vs. Crystal Palace and Brighton vs. Watford.

?? In Germany meanwhile, there’s much more going on with the majority of teams all in action today.

You’ll forgive us for getting carried away after his 8 goals in his first 4 games, but we’re particularly looking forward to seeing if Erling Braut Haaland can continue his run in the late kick-off between Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.

?? With the majority of the attention in Serie A headed towards the fixtures on Sunday, Juventus could quietly extend their lead at the top of the table today, should they win their away trip to Hellas Verona. And can Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s already into double figures in terms of goals this year, score in his 10th consecutive Serie A game? 11 back-to-back games is the league record here, so one to keep an eye on.

?? This may prove to be a little early for you, depending on your time zone but the Japanese Supercup will be decided today, with J-League champions, Yokohama F. Marinos meeting Emperor Cup winners, Vissel Kobe.

But if it’s derbies you’re in to, we might just have something for you!

?? The action starts early with the Sydney Derby between A-League rivals, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.

? ? In Colombia’s second city, Deportivo and América de Cali go toe-to-toe, whilst in Paraguay, we’ll have the Clásico más añejo or oldest derby between Guaraní and Olimpia, where incidentally a certain Roque Santa Cruz is also on course to break a league record for scoring in consecutive games.

Elsewhere, Switzerland’s big intercity rivalry sees FC Zürich host Basel whilst we’ll have a vested interest in the match between Portugal’s biggest clubs – with our favourite YouTuber, Ellis in the stands supporting Porto as they welcome Benfica to the Estádio do Dragão.

? Sunday

?? As mentioned, there will be a lot of eyes on the games in Serie A today, not least at the San Siro, where we’ll see the second Derby di Milano of the 2019/20 season.

Inter are the ‘hosts’ this time around and they will need to complete the double over the side they share a stadium with, if they’re to maintain their title challenge. Goals from Marcelo Brozović and Romelu Lukaku secured a 2-0 win the last time they met.

?? Sunday is a busy day in La Liga as well, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona on their travels – Zidane’s men heading to Osasuna in the afternoon before Quique Setién must return to his former club, Real Betis in the evening kick-off.

There will also be an unusual amount of Scandinavian interest in the big Basque Derby as well, with Real Sociedad’s Norwegian/Swedish combo – Martin Ødegaard and Alexander Isak set to face Athletic Club Bilbao.

??????? In the Premier League, it’s the turn of Sheffield United, AFC Bournemouth, Manchester City and West Ham United to pull the short straw and play on during the winter break.

Bournemouth travel to Sheffield and Manchester City will look to make it 12 wins on the bounce versus West Ham.

Did you know… Man City have lost six Premier League games this season, as many as they had in their previous two campaigns combined. Manager Pep Guardiola has never lost seven matches in any of his previous 10 top-flight campaigns.

??????? Bizarrely, West Ham United and Manchester City also meet in the WSL today, albeit at the opposite end of the country.

City will also be looking to rivals, Manchester United to put a dent in Chelsea’s recent form when they face the side currently sitting second behind City in the table.

It looks like being a famous day all round in the women’s top flight – with derbies in North London and on Merseryside, where Everton will host Liverpool at Goodison Park for the first time. Over 23,000 watched the side’s last meeting – the first to be held at Liverpool’s main stadium, Anfield.

Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

As usual here at the FotMob office, we’ve been hard at work picking through the Matches Tab and selecting what games you should be following this weekend. From the obscure, to the massive, we’ve got it all covered!

? Your Friday Appetisers

There’s plenty to get you going tonight so we’ve highlighted just a few of the great matches taking place around the world.

In Europe, there’s the chance to follow Benfica, the runaway leaders in the Portuguese Primeira plus you can catch up with how Wayne Rooney is doing back in English football. The Friday night game in the Bundesliga should be good, with two heavyweights going up against each other – Hertha vs. Schalke, whilst in France there’s the Breton Derby. ?

? With some countries still enjoying their winter breaks, the Atlantic Cup, hosted on the Algarve Coast in Portugal has been providing some much needed friendly competition for 10 years now. This year’s edition starts tonight and include sides from Sweden, Denmark, Kazakhstan, the Czech Republic and Norway.

?? And hopefully the Dutch FA have listened to our call, and got this mascot in again for the game at AZ Alkmaar.

? Saturday

?? Usually, you’d wait half a season for El Derbi to come along but today’s meeting between Real Madrid and Atlético is the club’s second meeting in three weeks!

The last game was of course, the Supercopa which finished 0-0. Only made memorable for Federico Valverde’s textbook definition of a professional foul – denying Atleti a certain goal in extra-time before Real went on to win on penalties.

More of the same today please, and maybe some goals!

??????? The Premier League is in overdrive with eight games spread across the day! Starting with an intriguing tie at Leicester City we then see key matches at the top and bottom of the table – Liverpool hosting Southampton whilst both Bournemouth vs. Aston Villa and West Ham vs. Brighton look like relegation six-pointers.

?? Bayern München have the chance to go top of the Bundesliga for a few short hours on Saturday, with RB Leipzig featuring in the evening kick-off. Leipzig do face 3rd placed, Gladbach though so that could prove crucial in this season’s title race.

?? If you’ve been missing international football, there’s an off-season friendly for the USMNT, against Costa Rica. The US were supposed to be taking a development squad to train in Qatar but with sensitivities in the region at a high, they’ve quickly rearranged this game in California.

?? ? ?? Lastly, the CAF Champions League group stage continues this weekend, so one to keep an eye on there – South African side and 2016 winners, Mamelodi Sundowns take on 2-time winners Wydad Casablanca, one of the biggest sides on the continent.

And we hope things have cooled down a bit for the games in the Argentine Superliga tonight. Last week was a bit much, for everybody!

? Sunday

??????? Mourinho and Guardiola meet once again in the Premier League today, one of the greatest managerial rivalries in the modern game. Or Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester City, as it’s otherwise known.

Did you know… This is the 23rd meeting in all competitions between José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola – Mourinho has lost 10 games against the Spaniard, four more than he has against any other manager.

??????? Staying in England, Manchester City’s Women’s team also have an important game as they take on Arsenal in the WSL. Both sides have an identical W11 D0 L2 record this season, so something has to give!

In the midweek League Cup Semi-Final meeting between the two, it was Arsenal that came out on top so City will be after immediate revenge.

Elsewhere, it’s a day for some of the grand old names in European football: There’s De Topper, with Ajax facing PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie, the away side really needing something to kickstart their ailing campaign. In Italy, leaders Juventus look to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat at Napoli, with Fiorentina visiting Turin, whilst Inter Milan travel to Udinese. And in La Liga, Barcelona will need a similar recovery to keep in touch with Madrid at the top of the table – they host Levante at Camp Nou.

?? In our final pick of the weekend, watch out for a result in Bolivia, where two of our favourite named clubs, in a league full of great names go head-to-head – Always Ready vs. The Strongest.

We’ll be spending far too much time trying to think up funny tweets about that one on Sunday night.
