??????? The FotMob Team of the Season for the Premier League

Our top-rated performers in England’s top flight

As Champions and the leagues’ dominant force as the year progressed, Manchester City players dominated our average match ratings and we’ve selected five of Pep Guardiola’s squad for our Best XI.

Despite an injury-hit campaign, Kevin De Bruyne was once again our highest rated Premier League player overall. Six goals and twelve assists as well as seven FotMob player of the match awards gave him an average rating of 7.81 across 2020/21.

This Weekend: Champions League Final and more!

This Weekend: Champions League Final and more!

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

? Probably the biggest game in club football anywhere in the world will take place at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão this evening, as Manchester City and Chelsea meet in the Champions League Final.

This, the 66th final in the record books will be the third all-English final, with the first coming as recently as 2008 when Manchester United defeated Chelsea on penalties in the Moscow rain.

City may have won the Premier League in three of the last four seasons but famously of course, this is the first time they’ve ever made it to the top European final whilst Chelsea have the collective memory of not only that loss in Russia, but also the triumph over Bayern München four years later. And as they were that season, Chelsea come in to this game as the underdogs.

Make sure you check your TV schedule in the app for a way to watch this one.

??????? Elsewhere, believe it or not there are still other crucial games being played around Europe. Not least in the UK, where Brentford face Swansea City in the so-called richest game in football, the Championship Play-Off Final.

With a place in the Premier League on offer, Brentford will be looking to overcome their record as the side to appear in the most play-offs, up and down the English league system without winning the decisive game (they’ve missed out nice times). Victory would mean the Bees return to the top flight for the first time since 1947 with Welsh club, Swansea looking to get back to the promised land where they have spent seven of the past 10 seasons.

?? There is also an important play-off game in Germany where the side who finishes third from bottom in the Bundesliga traditionally plays off against the team that finishes third in the 2. Bundesliga, hoping to save themselves from relegation. FC Köln have that task today, in fact their predicament is even worse as they lost the first-leg of this season’s play-off against Holstein Kiel, going down 1-0 at home in midweek. Today’s game is the all-important return leg.

Under the current format, the incumbent top flight team has only failed to maintain their top flight status three times since 2008, so the Billy Goats do at least have the weight of history on their side.

Sunday

?? As we edge towards a European summer that not only includes the Euros but also tournaments like the Copa America, Gold Cup and important World Cup qualifiers, you will start to see international friendlies being listed in the app.

For example, tomorrow sees the United States play against Switzerland in St. Gallen and the shots of the USMNT training in the alps ahead of the game have been lighting up social media this week.

?? Back in the CONCACAF region itself, the second leg of the Clausura final between Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna will conclude the current campaign in Mexico tomorrow evening.

Cruz Azul, who finished the regular season top of the league hold a narrow 1-0 lead over Santos after a nervy 90 minutes played out on Thursday night. If they can back that up on Sunday, they will win their ninth title in Liga MX.

?? And finally, this weekend marks the start of the 2021 Brasileirão, one of the biggest leagues in South America.

On Sunday, back-to-back Brazilian champions Flamengo start their latest title defence against Palmeiras, current holders of the Copa Libertadores, the continents’ biggest prize of all. Right up until last weekend both clubs were involved in their respective state championships so don’t expect them to come into this game cold.

Flamengo defeated Rio-rivals Fluminense to win the Campeonato Carioca but Palmerias suffered defeat at the hands of their old enemies São Paulo, in the equivalent final of the Paulista.

Our top-rated performers in Spain

Two players from La Liga champions Atlético Madrid combine with three from Real Madrid, four from Barcelona and one apiece from Sevilla and newly-crowned Europa League winners Villarreal to make up our Best XI for the league this season.

Lionel Messi maintained his customary place at the top of our individual player ratings, his haul of 30 goals, 9 assists and 20 FotMob Player of the Match awards giving him an average score of 8.35. That’s higher than anyone in Europe’s top five leagues.

Eight sides are represented in our Serie A Team of the Season, the most in any of Europe’s top leagues with runaway champions Inter providing just two players; 24-goal Romelu Lukaku and defensive rock Alessandro Bastoni.

Milan and Juventus are the only other teams represented by more than one player, with Juve’s Cristiano Ronaldo once again our best rated overall, averaging a score of 7.89 and earning ten player of the match awards across 33 league appearances.

This Weekend: Final round drama in the Big 5 leagues

This Weekend: Final round drama in the Big 5 leagues

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

?? There can’t have been that many final weekends of the seasons where all five of Europe’s biggest leagues still had something to play for – let alone titles still to be decided, as is the case in La Liga and Ligue 1. Today, La Liga takes centre-stage with all the important games kicking-off at the same early time to avoid any clashes with the Eurovision Song Contest. Yes, really.

As you’ll know the title will go to one of the Madrid clubs with Atlético currently holding a two point advantage over Real Madrid and looking to lift the trophy for the first time since 2014. The job for both sides is complicated by the fact they play sides who have something to play for themselves, with Atleti’s opponents Real Valladolid involved in a four-way fight over the three relegation spots and Madrid facing Villarreal, who are desperate to sneak in to the European qualification places.

Turn your notifications on for these games, there will be drama. ?

?? In Germany, the title and Champions League places may already be sown up but at the bottom, there’s still the small matter of three teams battling over one automatic relegation spot, a place in the relegation play-off versus the team who finishes third in the 2.Bundesliga AND out-and-out safety.

FC Köln start in the relegation zone but perhaps have the advantage of playing Schalke 04 who are already down whilst Werder Bremen have to play Borussia Mönchengladbach. And Arminia, the side currently sitting above the drop zone need to get something at Stuttgart.

It might still be worth watching the game between champions Bayern München and Augsburg, if only for the usually raucous title celebrations.

??????? St. Johnstone are set to meet Hibernian in today’s Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park. This will be a special occasion for fans of both clubs, but plans to let in a heavily capped crowd of just 600 have been shelved due to current lockdown restrictions in Glasgow.

St. Johnstone return to the final for the first time since they won the competition in 2014 whilst Hibs are back looking to repeat their success of 2016. That famous game against Rangers ended the club’s 114-year (ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN!) wait for a final win.

??????? Elsewhere in the UK, some of the most important games of the season take place in the EFL Championship play-offs with the second legs of both semi-finals set for today. These games will ultimately decide who gets a shot at the third promotion spot to the Premier League and both ties are on currently on a knife-edge.

AFC Bournemouth travel to Brentford with a slim 1-0 lead whilst Swansea City will at least have home advantage when they defend the same one-goal advantage against Barnsley. Remember: Away Goals do not count in these games – a rarity in English football.

Sunday

?? Make sure you get some sleep after all that drama today, because there’s bound to be more in store tomorrow. And that’s most likely to come from France, where as mentioned above – the Ligue 1 title will be decided on the final day.

LOSC hold all the cards with their one point advantage but they do have to play away at Angers. PSG are best placed to take advantage should Lille slip up but their opponents, Stade Brestois will want to avoid dropping into the relegation play-off place so need points themselves. Finally, Monaco are waiting in the wings in the unlikely event of both Lille and PSG losing, as with a significant swing in goal difference they could steal the title.

?? Elsewhere, with the Serie A title already taken by Inter, all eyes will be on the race for the Champions League places. Atalanta currently sit in second and are assured of their spot amongst Europe’s elite but they will have a significant say in who’ll join them as they play third placed Milan.

Milan are level on points with Napoli, who travel to Hellas Verona. Wins for both would guarantee that Juventus (one point back in fifth) are the Italian giants to miss out but you would be a fool to write off the Old Lady just yet! A win at Bologna combined with the likelihood of at least Milan dropping points against such strong opposition will be all it takes for them to slide their way in.

??????? Matters are perhaps even more complicated in the Premier League with three sides fighting over two Champions League places, another three contesting the remaining Europa League spot and even Arsenal down in 9th eyeing up Europa Conference League qualification.

With that said, perhaps the key games to look out for are Chelsea’s trip to Aston Villa, Roy Hodgson overseeing his final match in charge of Crystal Palace at former club Liverpool, Leicester City vs. Spurs and Arsenal against Brighton.

?? Finally, if the maths needed to keep track of all those leagues is too much, there’s the simple winner-takes-all final of the Taça de Portugal to look forward to. Braga take on Benfica in the finale to what’s been an interesting season in Portugal with Benfica’s rivals Sporting shaking things up by winning the league.

??????? The FotMob Championship Team of the Season

Our top-rated performers from the Championship

Unsurprisingly, Norwich City dominates our Championship Team of the Season as the Canaries won the league while scoring 75 goals and only allowing 36 over 46 matches.

Elsewhere, Brentford’s Ivan Toney led the league with 31 goals, and our top-rated player Emi Buendía racked up the most assists with 16.

This Weekend: Derby d’Italia, FA Cup Final, Turkey’s title battle and Superclásico

This Weekend: Derby d’Italia, FA Cup Final, Turkey’s title battle and Superclásico

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

?? Serie A, like all good TV drama understands the importance of the penultimate episode in a season. Which is why they’ve scheduled not only the Derby d’Italia, Juventus vs. Inter but also the Rome Derby between Roma and Lazio for today.

It’s just a shame there isn’t more riding on it, Inter having already wrapped up the league and Lazio (currently 6th) guaranteed to finish above Roma (7th). There is of course the battle for Champions League qualification, with outgoing champions Juventus desperate for points as they look to finish in the top four.

??????? Today is also one of the biggest days in the English football calendar as the final of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest national football competition takes place at Wembley. Chelsea meet Leicester City in what is the 140th edition of the showpiece fixture.

And despite that weight of history, there’s still the chance of a first if Jamie Vardy’s name appears on the Leicester teamsheet. Should he be selected, he will become the first player ever to appear in each of the qualifying rounds and the main competition – 14 rounds in total across his playing career.

?? If they got it slightly wrong in Italy, the scriptwriters have set us up perfectly for the final day in Turkey. All three of Istanbul’s giant clubs could still win the title! And obviously, all three kick-off at the same time so make sure you keep an eye on all the drama as it unfolds!

Beşiktaş go to Göztepe and start as leaders, level on points with rivals Galatasaray who face Yeni Malatyaspor. Trailing them by two points are Fenerbahçe, also on their travels at Kayserispor.

?? Earlier this week, Sporting Lisbon ended 18 seasons of hurt by claiming their first Portuguese title since 2002. Having watched either their city rivals, Benfica or national rivals FC Porto pick up the trophy every year, it’s perhaps fitting that they make the trip across town to Benfica for what is their penultimate game.

And don’t think Sporting will put their feet up for this one, they still have the chance of going the full season unbeaten having won 25 games and drawn 7 so far.

Sunday

? Tomorrow, Chelsea will meet Barcelona in the final of the Women’s Champions League, being held in Gothenburg, Sweden. Neither club have previously won the competition at the pinnacle of the women’s game but for both, who have seen heavy investment in recent seasons – this is undoubtably the goal.

Already domestic champions in England and Spain, each side features an array of the world’s best attacking talent – players like Sam Kerr, Pernille Harder, Caroline Graham Hansen, Jennifer Hermoso, Lieke Martens and Fran Kirby. Definitely worth a watch.

?? Sunday also tells us whether Barcelona’s mens team will finally see their feint title hopes extinguished in La Liga. With two rounds to play, Barça trail leaders Atlético Madrid by four points and sit two down on Real Madrid in third. In fact, should Real Madrid drop points, the title will go to Atleti if they beat Osasuna.

Real Madrid perhaps have the toughest assignment, going to Athletic Club whilst Barcelona are at home to Celta Vigo.

?? We see a similar situation in France where up to three sides are still realistically in the running for the Ligue 1 title. But tomorrow, as in Spain should either PSG or Monaco slip up LOSC can claim their first league triumph since 2011, as long as they themselves beat Saint-Etienne.

PSG won’t want to hand over the trophy they’ve picked up for the past three seasons just yet but they are already reliant on Lille losing one of their two remaining games whilst picking up two wins themselves. Which is not something they’ve been guaranteed to do consistently this season.

?? In Germany, with Bayern already crowned champions we’ll be interested in the battle behind them tomorrow afternoon. Second meets third as RB Leipzig face Wolfsburg in a game likely to decide the runners-up spot. And fourth placed Borussia Dortmund will be looking to cling on to the last Champions League spot when they go to Mainz 05, hopefully hangover free after their big midweek win over Leipzig in the final of the DFB Pokal.

If you are particularly interested in German football, we’re currently giving away a Wolfsburg kit belonging to their Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels. Head over to to our twitter for your chance to win!

?? And last, but not least tomorrow also features perhaps the biggest club rivalry of them all – Boca Juniors against River Plate in Argentina. With the top flight currently on hiatus, the last two short seasons played in the country have been on a league cup format and with Boca the defending champions, this game will feature as one of this year’s quarter-finals.

Interview: Patrick Berg on Bodø/Glimt’s mental training and Champions League dreams

Interview: Patrick Berg on Bodø/Glimt’s mental training and Champions League dreams

Ahead of the 2021 season, we spoke with Bodø/Glimt and Norway midfielder Patrick Berg.

By Curt Baker

Located within the Arctic Circle, Bodø/Glimt is no ordinary football club, and Patrick Berg is no ordinary Glimt player. The midfielder is the third-generation Berg to play for the club, but the first to win a league title.

“I personally have a long history with the club, and my family does as well, so I feel like I have it in my veins, the Glimt blood.

“My grandad and his teammates had to go through a lot to get the club into the Norwegian league. Before the early 70s it was only the northern Norwegian teams playing together and the south of Norway playing together.

“The way they brought pride to people in the northern region when they won the cup in 1975 I think stands as the most important time in our history as a club. But, of course last season as well, me and my teammates did something really important in terms of the club’s history.”

Bodø/Glimt didn’t just win the Norwegian league last year (and notably, the first title in the club’s history). They dominated it. Breaking just about every record you can think of along the way: most goals scored in a season, most points, biggest title winning margin — statistically, no other club in Norway has done anything like it. But as their captain, Berg says they’re not finished yet.

“I think if you start focusing on results and titles, you’d be quite happy when you win the Norwegian league, and you might think, ‘Okay, what else can we do?’ When we’re focused on performance instead of results, we never want to stop.”

Glimt’s innovative approach to mental training and mindfulness, led by former fighter pilot turned mental coach Bjørn Mannsverk, does away with the results-based mentality and usual goal-setting for the season, focusing instead on the quality of performances alone. The approach includes meditation before training, group meetings, and one-on-one sessions focusing on techniques to improve performance and development.

And as they embark on their biggest challenge yet: a title defence and Champions League qualification campaign, it’s this training regime which Berg credits for keeping pressure off of the players.

“We are really, really precise about what our focus should be. And when you have that focus, you don’t think about consequences and what could happen. You actually focus on your tasks as a football player — and that personally for me takes away a lot of the pressure that is coming from the outside.”

As is typical in leagues the size of the Eliteserien, Glimt had their best players snapped up by teams abroad as Jens Petter Hauge, Philip Zinckernagel, and Kasper Junker all left (to AC Milan, Watford, and Urawa Red Diamonds, respectively) after scoring a combined 60 goals in 2020. That means Glimt will be taking on Champions League competition with a new attack. But, Berg isn’t worried about embedding new players.

“I think every new guy who is coming in is probably a little bit nervous and anxious about where they fit in in the group, that’s just how we are as human beings. I think my role, as well as the other players who are more established, is that we have to take care of every single person who comes into our group.

“We all want the same thing — we want to be the best possible version of ourselves, and I don’t think that’s possible if people are scared of being themselves. That’s the message we give to every new guy that comes in, just be yourself.

“Our mindset has helped us a lot, and I feel that the new players coming in adapt really quickly. They feel safe in our environment. We just want to push each other forward, and if someone makes a mistake or does something stupid, it’s okay, it’s acceptable in this club. I think the way we go about things in our club is really healthy.”

The new additions will need to be firing early, as Glimt’s Champions League campaign begins in June, something which Berg has dared to dream of for years.

“Back in 2016 I said to the club’s homepage that my dream one day was to play in the Champions League with Bodø/Glimt. That was actually right after we got relegated, so I don’t think anybody believed me that it would be possible, and only four years later.

“Personally, my hope is that we dare to be ourselves, and we dare to play our football. Even if we meet teams that are supposed to be better than us, I think going into Europe and suddenly starting to play in a different way, that’s not us. And I don’t think that’s the way to go about it. I would be extremely disappointed if we go out in the qualifying stages feeling that we could have done more. My hopes are just that we give it our all and see how far it takes us.”

And at home in the Eliteserien, no one is expecting Glimt’s title-defence to be straightforward, with an incredibly deep Molde side, a reinvigorated Rosenborg, and an ascending Vålerenga.

“I think our way is to just focus on ourselves and try to develop our play even more. But, the other teams have really strengthened their squads. I think it’s going to be a really, really fun season for everyone who follows Norwegian football.” says Berg.

The new season sees the return of an Arctic Circle rivalry as Glimt host their closest neighbours, Tromsø, on Sunday.

“Probably the best way to start a new season is at home against Tromsø,” says Berg. “I think they have been looking really good in preseason. Hopefully for them and for us we can both have good seasons and really put northern Norway on the map.”

This Weekend: Man United vs. Liverpool, crunch time in France, Spain and Italy

This Weekend: Man United vs. Liverpool, crunch time in France, Spain and Italy

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

?? We start in Spain, where Barcelona’s failure to take advantage of their game in hand – losing at home to Granada on Thursday, has left La Liga’s title race looking incredibly tight with just five rounds to play.

Today, the attention is on Atlético and Real Madrid. Leaders Atleti visit Elche this afternoon meaning that Madrid will know whether they can leapfrog their rivals in to top spot by the time they kick off at home to Osasuna this evening.

?? Things aren’t quite as tight in Serie A, where Inter could seal their first Scudetto in 11 years should results go their way this weekend. Inter effectively need two more wins from their remaining five games but a win at bottom side Crotone today, combined with Atalanta dropping points at Sassuolo tomorrow would be enough for Antonio Conte’s side.

?? The heat is also on in Ligue 1, although matters won’t be decided just yet. The top two, currently separated by a single point both play today. Second placed PSG face Lens, on paper their toughest game in the run-in with the newly promoted side surpassing all expectations and sitting fifth in the table. Meanwhile Lille play Nice in the evening kick-off. Lille’s title bid is defying all the stats this season, for example they’ve scored 57 league goals despite having a team xG of 44.3. That means they’re vastly outperforming in relation to the chances they’re creating.

??????? In England, Manchester City’s situation is very similar to Inters’ in Serie A. Beat Crystal Palace in today’s early game and they’ll know that a favour from outgoing champions Liverpool against old rivals Manchester United tomorrow would hand the Premier League title to City.

Elsewhere, there’s a West London Derby for England’s other remaining representative in the Champions League as Chelsea take on near neighbours Fulham. The visitors will be desperate for a result as they currently sit seven points from safety with five to play.

?? There’s no Bundesliga action this weekend as the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal take precedence. The second of these takes place today with Borussia Dortmund playing 2.Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel. The lower league team have never played in the Bundesliga but they did knock out Bayern München earlier in this cup run!

?? South of the German border, its Cup Final day in Austria with LASK facing overwhelming favourites Salzburg. The Red Bull side have claimed seven of the last ten finals and this is just stage one of coach Jesse Marsch’s farewell as he looks odds on to complete another league and cup double before completing his move to Leipzig.

? If you fancy something a little more obscure, watch out for two South American derbies as the biggest games in both Ecuadorian and Paraguayn football take place tonight. Barcelona (not that one) meet Emelec in the Clásico del Astillero (Shipyard Derby) whilst Cerro Porteño face Olimpia in Asunción.

Sunday

??????? Tomorrow, as mentioned above we get to enjoy one of the Premier Leagues biggest matches, Manchester United vs. Liverpool. This meeting has the added benefit of effectively deciding the title in Manchester City’s favour, should United drop points.

And if you needed a reminder of how crazy this Premier League season started out before City came to the fore – just check out the biggest win and biggest defeats column in our Season so far guide for United and Liverpool!

?? In Italy, most of the attention will be on Atalanta’s game at Sassuolo as that too could decide the destination of the title if Inter win today.

As for Juventus, with their defence of the Scudetto effectively over, Andrea Pirlo’s side will be concentrating on retaining their customary place in the Champions League. They currently sit fourth but level on points Napoli above them and Milan below so any further slip-ups could prove costly. Tomorrow, Juventus start their run-in away at Udinese.

?? After Thursday’s slip – Barcelona will be looking to bounce back on the road at Valencia knowing that anything other than a win seriously dents their title chances. They’ll likely have to do it without the presence of coach Ronald Koeman in the dugout, with the Dutchman facing a touchline ban following his red card during that midweek defeat to Granada.

? Barcelona’s women’s side will also feature tomorrow as their host the second leg of their Women’s Champions League semi-final against PSG. That game is poised at 1-1 on aggregate. On the other side of the draw, Bayern will be defending a narrow 2-1 lead when they go to English league leaders Chelsea.

?? Ajax will wrap up their 35th and second consecutive Eredivisie title if they pick up a point against FC Emmen on Sunday afternoon. With the 2019/20 season abandoned at the height of the pandemic, this will be a chance to celebrate afresh following their win in the KNFB Cup last month.

??????? In Scotland, Rangers – already crowned champions face Old Firm rivals Celtic once again. This will be the fifth meeting between the two this season, with Rangers winning three of the previous four and the other ending in a 1-1 draw.

? And lastly, in Argentina a game with perhaps less notoriety than the Old Firm Derby but no less history and no less hatred between the two sides wraps up our weekend preview. And that’s the game between Rosario Central and Newell’s Old Boys, or the Scoundrels and the Lepers if we go by their chosen monikers for each other. Expect heat in this one.
