They also call in local experts to explore some regional Super League projects that might be more appealing to fans than the European Super League ever was, and chat about everything that caught the eye in the last month of European football.

Download and listen to the first episode of “The Sweeper” wherever you get your podcasts, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts & many more.

You can follow “The Sweeper” on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook & YouTube for regular audio updates on all the European leagues from a team of journalists and contributors.

This Weekend: Man United vs. Liverpool, crunch time in France, Spain and Italy

This Weekend: Man United vs. Liverpool, crunch time in France, Spain and Italy

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

?? We start in Spain, where Barcelona’s failure to take advantage of their game in hand – losing at home to Granada on Thursday, has left La Liga’s title race looking incredibly tight with just five rounds to play.

Today, the attention is on Atlético and Real Madrid. Leaders Atleti visit Elche this afternoon meaning that Madrid will know whether they can leapfrog their rivals in to top spot by the time they kick off at home to Osasuna this evening.

?? Things aren’t quite as tight in Serie A, where Inter could seal their first Scudetto in 11 years should results go their way this weekend. Inter effectively need two more wins from their remaining five games but a win at bottom side Crotone today, combined with Atalanta dropping points at Sassuolo tomorrow would be enough for Antonio Conte’s side.

?? The heat is also on in Ligue 1, although matters won’t be decided just yet. The top two, currently separated by a single point both play today. Second placed PSG face Lens, on paper their toughest game in the run-in with the newly promoted side surpassing all expectations and sitting fifth in the table. Meanwhile Lille play Nice in the evening kick-off. Lille’s title bid is defying all the stats this season, for example they’ve scored 57 league goals despite having a team xG of 44.3. That means they’re vastly outperforming in relation to the chances they’re creating.

??????? In England, Manchester City’s situation is very similar to Inters’ in Serie A. Beat Crystal Palace in today’s early game and they’ll know that a favour from outgoing champions Liverpool against old rivals Manchester United tomorrow would hand the Premier League title to City.

Elsewhere, there’s a West London Derby for England’s other remaining representative in the Champions League as Chelsea take on near neighbours Fulham. The visitors will be desperate for a result as they currently sit seven points from safety with five to play.

?? There’s no Bundesliga action this weekend as the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal take precedence. The second of these takes place today with Borussia Dortmund playing 2.Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel. The lower league team have never played in the Bundesliga but they did knock out Bayern München earlier in this cup run!

?? South of the German border, its Cup Final day in Austria with LASK facing overwhelming favourites Salzburg. The Red Bull side have claimed seven of the last ten finals and this is just stage one of coach Jesse Marsch’s farewell as he looks odds on to complete another league and cup double before completing his move to Leipzig.

? If you fancy something a little more obscure, watch out for two South American derbies as the biggest games in both Ecuadorian and Paraguayn football take place tonight. Barcelona (not that one) meet Emelec in the Clásico del Astillero (Shipyard Derby) whilst Cerro Porteño face Olimpia in Asunción.

Sunday

??????? Tomorrow, as mentioned above we get to enjoy one of the Premier Leagues biggest matches, Manchester United vs. Liverpool. This meeting has the added benefit of effectively deciding the title in Manchester City’s favour, should United drop points.

And if you needed a reminder of how crazy this Premier League season started out before City came to the fore – just check out the biggest win and biggest defeats column in our Season so far guide for United and Liverpool!

?? In Italy, most of the attention will be on Atalanta’s game at Sassuolo as that too could decide the destination of the title if Inter win today.

As for Juventus, with their defence of the Scudetto effectively over, Andrea Pirlo’s side will be concentrating on retaining their customary place in the Champions League. They currently sit fourth but level on points Napoli above them and Milan below so any further slip-ups could prove costly. Tomorrow, Juventus start their run-in away at Udinese.

?? After Thursday’s slip – Barcelona will be looking to bounce back on the road at Valencia knowing that anything other than a win seriously dents their title chances. They’ll likely have to do it without the presence of coach Ronald Koeman in the dugout, with the Dutchman facing a touchline ban following his red card during that midweek defeat to Granada.

? Barcelona’s women’s side will also feature tomorrow as their host the second leg of their Women’s Champions League semi-final against PSG. That game is poised at 1-1 on aggregate. On the other side of the draw, Bayern will be defending a narrow 2-1 lead when they go to English league leaders Chelsea.

?? Ajax will wrap up their 35th and second consecutive Eredivisie title if they pick up a point against FC Emmen on Sunday afternoon. With the 2019/20 season abandoned at the height of the pandemic, this will be a chance to celebrate afresh following their win in the KNFB Cup last month.

??????? In Scotland, Rangers – already crowned champions face Old Firm rivals Celtic once again. This will be the fifth meeting between the two this season, with Rangers winning three of the previous four and the other ending in a 1-1 draw.

? And lastly, in Argentina a game with perhaps less notoriety than the Old Firm Derby but no less history and no less hatred between the two sides wraps up our weekend preview. And that’s the game between Rosario Central and Newell’s Old Boys, or the Scoundrels and the Lepers if we go by their chosen monikers for each other. Expect heat in this one.

This Weekend: Carabao Cup Final, Premier League rivalries, Bayern’s title win?

This Weekend: Carabao Cup Final, Premier League rivalries, Bayern’s title win?

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

?? Regardless of what happens elsewhere in the Bundesliga this weekend, Bayern München will clinch their NINTH straight title if they win at Mainz 05 this afternoon.

Mainz are on a good run of form, unbeaten in six league games but it seems unlikely that Bayern won’t be fully motivated for this one, especially with Robert Lewandowski’s return to full training this week.

Already the leading scorer across Europe’s big five leagues this season, the Pole is hunting down Gerd Müller’s all-time record of 40 goals in a single Bundesliga season. And with four games to go, you wouldn’t put it past him.

??????? There’s three games in the Premier League today, with the London derby between West Ham United and Chelsea being both the most important, and probably most heated. And for once, the sides are meeting as equals on the pitch, locked together on 55 points and sitting 4th and 5th in the table.

Elsewhere, Liverpool take on Newcastle in a fixture that has provided a few classic Premier League scorelines over the years and relegated Sheffield United will be playing for pride, with Brighton & Hove Albion the visitors to Brammal Lane.

?? In Spain, where the lead changed hands twice in midweek, we could once again see Real Madrid go top today. That will only happen should Zinedine Zidane’s side beat Real Betis at home. And because in La Liga the league positions of sides level on points are determined by head-to-head records rather than goal difference.

?? It’s early days in the new MLS season, but today we’ll get an early indicator on how the Western Conference will play out as two of the league’s strongest sides meet, LAFC vs. Seattle Sounders. Both started the campaign with wins last weekend, LAFC seeing off new boys Austin and Seattle looking ominously good in their 4-0 thrashing of Minnesota United.

Sunday

? Tomorrow, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur will meet in the 61st League Cup (currently sponsored by Carabao) Final at Wembley.

For City, this is a chance to equal Liverpool’s early 1980s record of winning four consecutive finals whilst Tottenham have reached this stage for the first time since winning it in 2008. That is the club’s last major honour, so winning this one would be a major coup for 29-year-old rookie coach Ryan Mason, who was placed in charge after José Mourinho was sacked earlier this week.

? The Women’s Champions League has reached the semi-final stage, and with Lyon knocked out in the last round – this will be the first time someone else will get their hands on the trophy since 2015! Tomorrow, we’ll see the first legs of both ties in the last four.

PSG, the club who saw off the 5-time winners will now face Barcelona and on the other side of the draw, the German league leaders Bayern München play English equivilents Chelsea.

?? There are games for three of Serie A’s title challengers Sunday afternoon. Inter, overwhelmingly favourites for the Scudetto could only draw in midweek but benefitted from Milan losing and Atalanta also failing to pick up three points.

Inter will look to resume normal service at home to Hellas Verona. And elsewhere, third placed Atalanta play Bologna whilst Juventus are in Florence to face Fiorentina.

?? With five games to go in Ligue 1, the now four-way title race looks like it will go down to the wire. Such is the congested nature of the table, Lille, top going in to the weekend could find themselves down to third by the time they play tomorrow evening. That is because PSG play today and in-form Monaco kick-off earlier on Sunday.

Lille face by far their toughest remaining fixture as they clash with Lyon, the fourth side with an interest in the title race. Win and Lille will go back to the summit, lose and the table just gets tighter!

?? Likewise in La Liga, Atlético will most likely need to win at Athletic Club if they are to re-take top spot in the table.

Below them, Barcelona’s outside bid for the title will require them overcoming 7th placed Villarreal who, of course boast the attacking threat of Gerard Moreno. The Spanish number nine is currently the third top scorer in the league, behind the mercurial Lionel Messi and Karim Benzema.

??????? Of the three Premier League games scheduled for tomorrow, we’ll be treated to two big English club rivalries.

In the first, we see Yorkshire and Lancashire battle it out in the guise of Leeds United vs. Manchester United. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have already taken points off one of the clubs who signed up to the Super League this week, and will be looking to do the same against United.

And secondly, we have the West Midlands Derby between Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion. A win for Villa will all but seal Albion’s fate this season but with Sam Allardyce’s side set to face their other major rival, Wolves in their next game, he’ll be basing his unlikely Premier League survival bid on big back-to-back performances.

West Ham star Jesse Lingard opens up on mental health

West Ham star Jesse Lingard opens up on mental health

The Premier League’s comeback star talks mental health and his journey

Jesse Lingard has been the comeback story of the season, with 9 goals and 3 assists in 10 matches since joining West Ham on loan in January. But prior to that, Lingard had been under pressure after a drop in form at United. In a new interview, Lingard opens up on that period, during which his family’s mental health struggles weighed heavily on him, and the impact of that on his own mental health.

“I want to change people’s lives and inspire others to start opening up, cause I’ve been through it and I know what it’s like to bottle things up, so if I can pass on the information to anyone who’s going through mental health issues, it’ll make me smile,” said Lingard, on why he decided to share his story.

This Weekend: Copa del Rey, FA Cup Semi-Finals, The Old Firm

This Weekend: Copa del Rey, FA Cup Semi-Finals, The Old Firm

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

? For the second time this April there is a Copa del Rey final taking place in Spain. And just as they were in the delayed 2020 final that was finally played two weekends ago, Athletic Club Bilbao are one of the sides taking part. This time they face Barcelona, who start as overwhelming favourites.

Athletic will need to overcome the disappointment of losing to arch-Basque rivals Real Sociedad in that previous edition of the final, if they are to rescue anything from this unique opportunity, playing two such important games virtually back-to-back. Perhaps they can channel the vigour they showed to beat Barcelona in the Supercopa tournament back in January, a result which came during a month in which they also played, and lost to Barça twice in La Liga.

It’s been a crazy season for scheduling in Spain!

??????? In England, we have reached the semi-final stage of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest national football competition. Today’s match up sees the country’s two remaining representatives in the Champions League go head-to-head at Wembley, Chelsea vs. Manchester City.

There are two other English fixtures that may be of interest. Firstly, in the Premier League West Ham United travel to Newcastle United knowing that a win will take them third in the table. And secondly, in the late Championship kick-off, Norwich City host Bournemouth looking for the three points that will guarantee their immediate return to the top flight, regardless of results earlier in the day.

?? Bayern München, whose defence of the Champions League title ended in defeat to PSG during the week will need to bounce back in the Bundesliga if they are to avoid the same happening in their domestic league. Today, they face third-placed Wolfsburg, easily their stiffest test remaining in the final six rounds of the season.

?? And in the United States, it’s the opening weekend of the new MLS season and later we’ll get to see the inaugural game for new expansion club Austin FC, who travel to LAFC. The side from the state capital of Texas formed back in 2018 so it’s been a long wait for an ownership group that includes Matthew McConaughey, to finally see them in competitive action.

Sunday

??????? There are two Premier League games tomorrow as both Manchester United and Arsenal, fresh from their exploits in the Europa League quarter-finals turn their attention to the bread and butter of the season. Arsenal go against fellow Londoners Fulham who will be desperate for points in their bid to avoid the drop. And further north, Manchester United welcome fellow Lancastrians Burnley to Old Trafford.

? In the Cup, it’s back to Wembley for the second semi-final between Leicester City and Southampton – two sides who can boast just FA Cup triumph between them, that being Southampton’s most famous hour way back in 1976.

??????? Sticking with Cup competition, we move to Scotland where Glasgow giants and age-old rivals Rangers and Celtic meet in the fourth round of the Scottish FA Cup.

?? Silverware will be on offer in the Netherlands tomorrow, with Ajax taking on Vitesse in the final of the KNVB Cup. With the cup not reaching a conclusion due the pandemic last season, Ajax are still technically the holders having won their 19th title back in 2019. Vitesse meanwhile won their solitary title in 2017.

?? In La Liga, the title race will no doubt take another twist due to results tomorrow. Atlético, who lead the table by a solitary point play Eibar at home whilst Real Madrid, the side trailing their cross-city rivals play away at Getafe. With Barcelona in Cup action, this is a chance for both sides to take the initiative in what looks like it’s going to be a very exciting run-in.

?? The battle for the Scudetto in Italy’s Serie A might not be as close but with eight rounds to play, the sides behind leaders Inter will be looking for them to start slipping up sooner rather than later. For their part, Inter won their tenth straight league game last time out and they’ll be hoping to boost their eleven point lead when they go to Napoli on Sunday evening. Earlier in the day, third meets fourth as Juventus battle it out with Atalanta, who are still the highest scoring side in the league this season.

?? Lastly, there’s the small matter of the Cairo Derby tomorrow night. One of, if not the biggest club game in Africa. Zamalek and bitter rivals Al Ahly have not played each other since the sides met in the CAF Champions League final back in November, a game in which Al Ahly came out on top.

This Weekend: El Clásico, Spurs vs. United, European rivalries

This Weekend: El Clásico, Spurs vs. United, European rivalries

The best action to follow this weekend

Saturday

?? The main event this weekend is undoubtedly Saturday evening’s El Clásico. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona have made their way back into the title hunt, and there’s the possibility that this could be Messi’s final appearance in the famous rivalry.

Real enter the match undefeated in 12 games across all competitions, while Barça are undefeated in 9. However, with both Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane ruled out for Real Madrid, it could be Barcelona who add another tally to their undefeated run.

??????? The Premier League serves up three fixtures on Saturday featuring the three English sides still left in the Champions League (for now). In the early kickoff, Man City host a Leeds side who have only scored four goals in their last five matches. Then, ninth-place Aston Villa visit seventh-place Liverpool, with the hosts three points off the Champions League places. And the evening kickoff sees Chelsea away to Crystal Palace with the Blues on a run of eight away games unbeaten.

?? Saturday’s Bundesliga action brings us third versus fourth as Wolfsburg visit Frankfurt with both sides looking to cement a spot in next year’s Champions League. Frankfurt have scored the second-most goals in the league this season, with Portuguese forward André Silva scoring 22 in 25 matches.

Elsewhere, Bayern face Union Berlin, who earned a 1-1 draw against the current league leaders in their last meeting in December, while Dortmund, coming off a loss to Frankfurt, visit a Stuttgart side who sit just four points behind them.

?? Soccer returns in the US this weekend with the NWSL kicking off its season with the Challenge Cup. The USWNT are also in action, as they face Sweden on Saturday in a friendly.

?? The Swedish Allsvenskan also begins its 2021 season on Saturday, with a tasty matchup between Malmö and Hammarby to start, followed by Örebro hosting a new-look IFK Göteborg side that picked up Marek Hamsik (!!!) in the transfer window. Hamsik has been recovering from an injury, but a Göteborg supporter has already released a tribute track.

?? In Argentina, it’s the Clásico de Avellaneda, a derby between two clubs that share the same street in Buenos Aires, Racing and Independiente. If you want to dive in, the folks over at These Football Times have the backstory.

Sunday

??????? In the EPL’s headline match of the weekend, José Mourinho hosts his former employers as United visit Spurs. Their last meeting in October ended in a 6-1 win for Spurs, who now sit two points off of European places.

In an unexpected battle to secure Champions League spots for next season, Leicester are away to West Ham. The Hammers are unbeaten in four home games, a run which includes a 3-3 draw with Arsenal and a 2-1 win over Spurs.

?? Atletico Madrid could kick-off against Real Betis in second place, depending on the result of Saturday’s El Clásico, while Betis sit in a Europa Conference League spot and will hope to leapfrog Real Sociedad into fifth, a Europa League spot.

?? Someone will be lifting a trophy in Brazil on Sunday, as the Super Cup takes place with league winners Flamengo facing cup-winners Palmeiras.

?? Across Europe, we’ll be treated to a number of heated rivalries on Sunday.

In Austria, the nation’s most popular club, Rapid Wien, play league leaders Salzburg who are in the hunt for their eighth straight title. Despite being Salzburg’s closest challengers, Rapid have suffered some nasty defeats to Salzburg in recent years, including a 6-2 loss in the cup in December and a 7-2 loss last June.

Belgium’s two biggest clubs face off as Anderlecht visit Club Brugge, who are walking to the title with a 19-point lead over second-place Royal Antwerp.

In the Danish Superliga, Brøndby are a point off top and host Denmark’s most successful club, FC København, who are seven points back but still hoping to make their mark on the title race.

And in Greece, we get perhaps the best-named derby of all — The Derby of Eternal Enemies or better yet, The Mother of All Battles — Olympiacos vs. Panathinaikos.

Live xG data is now in FotMob

Live xG data is now in FotMob

Our latest release brings you live Expected Goals data

Our latest app update incorporates live xG data as a part of our redesign of match pages. If you’re unfamiliar with the stat, Expected Goals (xG for short) is the likelihood that a shot will result in a goal. In other words, it is a measurement of how good the chance was.

Simon Rolfes, Bayern Leverkusen’s Sporting Director described the value of xG on Bundesliga.com, “We always look at our xG as it provides good feedback on how our attacking play is developing. Basically, it’s good for us to have a high xG in comparison to our opponents, because it means we’ve taken a lot of chances. For fans, xG is a good reflection of how a game is going, something other stats such as possession, shots on goal, and duels won perhaps don’t always do quite so well.”

In our new update, you’ll see xG incorporated in matches in the new mini-stat section in the Facts tab, as well as deeper xG data in the Stats tab. Plus, you can see the xG and xA (expected assists) of individual players by tapping on them in the Lineup tab.

Furthermore, you’ll find xG numbers on Team pages as well as Player pages. The data is available for 23 different competitions.

Below, we’ve collected various screens where you can find the data today, with more to come in future updates. We’re excited to hear what you think, please let us know by sending us a tweet or emailing us at support@fotmob.com.

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

This Weekend: Everything you need to know in 5 minutes

Club football returns this weekend so now is the perfect time to check your FotMob app is up to date and you’re running the latest version.

We say this because you’ll notice a whole host of improvements to the match experience and in particular, if stats are your thing, you may be pleased to hear that xG is here! We have xG for all of the top leagues, with live data during each game and for every player.

Below, we preview the best of the action on offer this weekend.

? Friday Night

?? It being a Bank Holiday ahead of the Easter Weekend in the UK, there is almost a full slate of EFL action including games for the majority of the movers and shakers in the Championship title race.

Leaders Norwich City will already be playing by the time you read this but later this evening, there are still two games of interest. Firstly, in-form Barnsley (5th) take on Reading (6th) in a battle between play-off rivals and then Swansea City (3rd) go to Birmingham City, where new manager Lee Bowyer will be hoping to inspire a turnaround in fortunes to lift the club out of relegation danger.

?? In Spain, the regular late Friday kick-off is between Levante and Huesca. The visitors remain bottom of La Liga but could jump two places with a win, and move within a point of Elche, the side currently sitting just outside the relegation zone and who they play next weekend.

? Saturday

? Tomorrow, we get the 2020 final of the Spanish Copa del Rey as rivals Athletic Club and Real Sociedad finally get to meet in the first Basque Derby ever to take place at this stage in a competition that has been running since 1903.

And in one of the great quirks of post-pandemic football, Athletic Club have to do it all again in two weeks time having also reached the final of this season’s Copa! That one will be against Barcelona, who are somewhat rejuvenated since Athletic beat them in the Supercopa back in January. Which Athletic wouldn’t even have normally been playing in until after last season’s cup final had taken place. ?

??????? The Premier League offers up four fixtures, all with some significant interest. Chelsea play West Brom first up, before the Yorkshire Derby between Leeds United and Sheffield United fills the afternoon slot.

Later, champions-elect Manchester City face third-placed Leicester City. And to close off proceedings, there’s the heavyweight clash between Arsenal and Liverpool which for reasons far too long to debate here, is this season a meeting between the sides ninth and seventh in the table.

?? The Bundesliga looks a little harder to call, but the headline game on Saturday should go some way to confirming if Bayern are to win a ninth straight title. They are on the road against RB Leipzig, the side sitting just four points behind them in second. The last three meetings between the sides have all been draws, with the latest a dramatic 3-3 thriller back in December.

?? First and second also meet in Ligue 1, with PSG hosting LOSC (aka Lille). Only goal difference separates the two as Paris have gradually caught up with this season’s most consistent side. We got a little taste of what is to come in this one though, with the teams meeting in the Coupe De France just prior to the international break, a game PSG won convincingly by three goals to nil.

?? In Serie A, there is a full round of games taking place on Saturday due, again to scheduling around Easter. And we’ll get to see how that brand new Inter crest is looking on the club’s shirts as they play away at Bologna. That game is the late kick-off so before that, Milan will get the chance to cut Inter’s six-point gap at the top, with Sampdoria visiting the San Siro. And for Juventus, there’s the small matter of the Derby della Mole against city-rivals, Torino. The Old Lady have not lost one of these derbies since April 2015, a run totalling 13 games.

? Sunday

??????? To close the weekend, and last of four Sunday games in the Premier League – Manchester United go up against Brighton and Hove Albion, a team that are no stranger to debates about the use of xG data in the game this season!

That is also the case for two clubs who meet earlier in the day, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. That one will be a real test for our new app features!

?? The German capital provides a big game in the Bundesliga, with Berlin rivals Union and Hertha going toe-to-toe. The two, separated for so long by the Wall and then by divisions meet in the top flight for just the fourth occasion. Hertha won the last meeting back in December, somewhat against the odds with Union performing better in the league this season. They go in to this one seven places and 14 points better off than their historically more illustrious rivals.

?? In La Liga, leaders Atlético face another stiff test of their credentials with a match at fourth placed Sevilla. Neither Real Madrid (playing Saturday) or Barcelona (in action on Monday) can catch Atleti in this round of games but Diego Simeone’s side can’t rest on their laurels. They must keep on grinding out the results if they are to lift their first title since 2014.
