Premier League Predictions: Newcastle United

Newcastle United had a fairytale 2022/23 campaign but this has now skewed hopes and expectations for the upcoming 2023/24 season. How will the manager and the players deal with the new pressures?

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

After Eddie Howe guided the Magpies to a mid-table finish during the 2021/22 season, many expected Newcastle to consolidate their position in the Premier League table before making a push for Europe in a year or two.

Few had them down as finishing in the Champions League places but that is exactly what happened. Yes, the Toon Army spent a bit of money to bring in the likes of Alexander Isak but Howe did a magnificent job with a number of players he inherited to guide his side to a fourth-place finish.

For a bit of context here, Newcastle conceded the joint fewest goals (33) along with Manchester City. They also lost the joint fewest number of matches (5), sharing this record with the eventual champions.

Howe’s side suffered just one defeat in their opening 23 matches in the Premier League and, at one stage, went on a 17-game unbeaten run to really announce themselves as genuine contenders for a place in the top four. They also went all the way to the Carabao Cup final.

A resilient defence and a well-structured shape were the foundations for their success, they did have a lot of fun in the final third on occasion. They romped to big wins over Brighton (4-1) and Spurs (6-1), beat Manchester United 2-0 and played out a 3-3 draw with Manchester City.

Newcastle had three players hit double figures with Callum Wilson (18), Miguel Almirón (11) and Isak (10), all getting in on the act. The latter impressed in his debut campaign in England despite injury.

However, none of these three weren’t the highest-rated Newcastle player per the FotMob ratings. That honour belonged to Kieran Trippier (7.74).  The England right-back was a creative menace for the Magpies, finishing with seven assists. He also racked up 24 big chances created, 110 chances created, and created chances worth 11.8 Expected Assists.

What has happened during the summer?

Considering there is Champions League football on offer and Newcastle United have the funds to attract a lot of players, they haven’t done much business this summer.

Howe missed out on rumoured top targets James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai. The former went to Spurs while the latter made the move to Liverpool.

Newcastle did manage to pry Sandro Tonali away from AC Milan though in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £55million. Bringing the talented 23-year-old to St James’ Park is considered quite the coup.

They have also added Harvey Barnes to their ranks. The former Leicester City winger, who scored 13 times last season, is a shrewd addition to the squad and will bolster their attacking ranks ahead of their Champions League campaign. The 25-year-old joined for a reported £38million and will likely fill the void left by Allan Saint-Maximim.

The flamboyant Frenchman has moved to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Ahli after four years with the club. He lacked output and managed just 12 goals for the Magpies in the league. As exciting as he was, the addition of Barnes gives Newcastle more of a goal threat.

What they should be aiming for next season?

Matching what they achieved last season will be difficult. Howe’s side are going to have to contend with European football and the extra demands this places on players. Teams also know what to expect from this Newcastle side now. There wasn’t exactly an element of surprise there but the opposition will adapt to combat Howe and his team now, and this might take some time to get used to.

The Magpies haven’t exactly bolstered their squad much ahead of the new campaign either. So a combination of things could see them struggle to hit the heights of last season.

Premier League Predictions: Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag’s debut season as Manchester United manager was a successful one but there’s going to be increased pressure on the Dutch tactician this time out. How he and the players deal with it will be interesting.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

Manchester United claimed a third-place finish in the Premier League and secured Champions League football. On that alone, it was a successful campaign.

The former Ajax man also guided the Red Devils to Carabao Cup success and reached the FA Cup final.

It was a strange campaign though in terms of results. They lost heavily to Brentford (4-0), Manchester City (6-3) and Liverpool (7-0) but also managed to pick up 2-1 wins over the latter two.

Only Newcastle United and Man City conceded fewer goals than United but their return of 58 could be beaten by six of the top 10, while ninth-placed Brentford scored the same number of goals. In truth, United struggled for consistency last season but, somehow, did enough to claim a top-four place. Their longest unbeaten run was just six games.

Marcus Rashford had a career-best season, netting 17 times in the Premier League. He was the only United player to hit double figures in the league though and this will no doubt be something Ten Hag looks to improve this season. The England international, perhaps surprisingly, didn’t manage the highest-rated average though. Bruno Fernandes (7.8) did.

In fact, the new United captain had the highest average of any player in the league last term, really highlighting his importance to the Red Devils.

What has happened during the summer?

Ten Hag has delved into the transfer market once again to splash the cash.

André Onana joined from Inter Milan for a reported fee of £44million. The one-time Ajax shot-stopper reunites with Ten Hag and replaces David De Gea as the club’s undisputed No.1. The former Atlético Madrid goalkeeper had initially been offered a new deal at Old Trafford but that was pulled by the club and he was allowed to leave on a free.

Mason Mount swapped the blue of Chelsea for the red of Manchester United this summer. Having rejected a contract extension at Stamford Bridge, the Blues sold him for an initial £55million. The 24-year-old claimed the iconic No.7 jersey and looks set to play a key role for the Red Devils moving forward.

Rasmus Højlund has finally finalised his £64million move from Atalanta. The versatile forward has impressed over the last 12 months and has the potential to lead the line at Old Trafford for the next decade if he develops as expected.

According to reports, another midfielder is being lined up with United being linked to both Sofyan Amrabat and Roméo Lavia while Harry Maguire could be sold if a good enough offer arrives.

What they should be aiming for next season?

Is it too early for a title challenge? With the money United have spent over the past 12 months, you are kind of hoping for more than just a top-four challenge, aren’t you?

The core group is now made up of players signed by the former Ajax boss. A top four finish is the bare minimum at this stage. They need to be pushing for an 80+ point season and seeing where it gets them. There needs to be some return for the outlay else questions will be asked.

Premier League Predictions: Manchester City

Premier League Predictions: Manchester City

Manchester City completed football last season so it is going to be interesting to see how hungry this group of players is this time around. If they aren’t completely focused, they could relinquish their grip on the Premier League title.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

Pep Guardiola’s side looked off the pace early on and found themselves five points behind Arsenal in the race for the title when the Premier League paused for the World Cup break.

As usual, though, they eventually clicked into gear. In the 24 English top-flight matches the team played following the mid-season break, City won 18 and this included a winning run of 12 games between February and May.

Erling Haaland broke the Premier League goalscoring record, finding the back of the net on 36 occasions. The former Borussia Dortmund striker involved himself in 44 goals last term and claimed a FotMob rating of 7.76. Only one player in the entire Premier League managed a higher average.

City had to switch the system mid-way through the campaign to get themselves back on track but it paid off. Guardiola was using Nathan Ake as a left-back and John Stones as an inverted right-back, making a 3-2-2-3 shape in possession. It turned out to be a masterstroke as both players had a key role in the Citizens going on to win a historic treble.

The most important month for City was in April. They started off with a 4-1 win over Liverpool and then finished it off with a 4-1 win over Arsenal to really assert their dominance in the Premier League.

What has happened during the summer?

Not as much as you would’ve thought.

The reigning champions have only been able to add Mateo Kovačić to their ranks. The former Chelsea man will boost Guardiola’s midfield options but he’s one of only two new faces through the door at the time of writing.

Compatriot Joško Gvardiol is the other, with the arrival of a new left-sided centre-back meaning there’s an expectation that Aymeric Laporte will leave the club. There is still uncertainty over whether or not Bernardo Silva will seek a transfer with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly keen. If he does depart, expect City to make a move for a left-sided attacker with both Michael Olise and Jeremy Doku mooted as possibilities.

City have already sold Riyad Mahrez to Al-Ahli for a fee believed to be in the region of £30million while İlkay Gündoğan left on a free transfer to join Barcelona.

What they should be aiming for next season?

City will always be title favourites. They have a stacked squad and they have the money to make a transfer happen out of nothing if they’re ever a little short towards the end of the transfer window, it is exactly what they did with Manuel Akanji last season.

They have the experience and the know-how to go on long winning runs.  They also possess the most dangerous striker in world football in Haaland. With him at their disposal, they’re always going to be amongst the goals and goals win you games.

The only real question mark is whether or not they’re going to be up for the fight again after a long 2022/23 season. It can take a lot out of teams.

Premier League Predictions: Luton Town

Premier League Predictions: Luton Town

Luton Town were one of the surprise packages of the 2022/23 Championship campaign. They will be hoping to be one of the surprise packages of the 2023/24 Premier League season, but it is going to be difficult.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

Luton finished sixth during the 2021/22 season and another play-off push was expected. However, the loss of manager Nathan Jones to Southampton in November had the potential to derail their campaign, especially after a difficult start.

By the time Jones left, Luton had lost five of their 20 matches.

They only lost three more during the remainder of the season on their way to a third-place finish under Rob Edwards. The new boss was sacked by rivals Watford after a handful of matches in charge and his appointment was a brave one by the Luton board.

Only champions Burnley lost fewer matches. In fact, Luton and the Clarets were the only two teams in the league to lose fewer than 10.

The Hatters finished the season with a 14-match unbeaten run and this set them up for a play-off clash with Sunderland. A first-leg defeat wasn’t enough to stop them from reaching Wembley and in the final, they beat Coventry on penalties to return to the English top-flight.

Carlton Morris was the main man for the Hatters, finishing the season with 20 Championship goals and seven assists. He topped the charts for both metrics. However, James Bree finished with the highest Expected Assists total (7.5) and Alfie Doughty finished with the highest FotMob average ( 7.39).

What has happened during the summer?

Perhaps not as much as fans would’ve liked to see happen.

So far, the club have brought in five players. Ryan Giles, a left-back, arrived from Wolves. Luton raided Birmingham for Tahith Chong, a versatile winger, and Barnsley for centre-back Mads Andersen.

The club turned Marvelous Nakamba’s loan spell from Aston Villa into a permanent one and this could be the signing of the summer for the Hatters.  Finally, Chiedozie Ogbene joined from Rotherham on a free transfer.

They’ve done well to keep hold of their key players but is that going to be enough? They didn’t need a scattergun approach like Nottingham Forest last summer but they may have needed a little more than what they have currently done.

What they should be aiming for next season?

First and foremost, survival will be the aim. It is going to be difficult though.

This is still largely a Championship-level squad. The quality hasn’t improved much so Edwards will be relying on the team, once again, buying into his philosophy to give them a fighting chance. If the team pulls together, they could record a number of shock results and it might be enough for survival. But it is a big if.

Kenilworth Road could play a part in their survival but relying on the home crowd is something of a risk when what happens on the pitch is out of their control.

Premier League Predictions: Liverpool

Premier League Predictions: Liverpool

A new era is upon Liverpool after a big summer overhaul. It was needed after a disappointing 2022/23 campaign but it will be interesting to see whether they have done too much or whether this new-look group can hit the ground running.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

In the end, the Reds claimed a fifth-placed finish. This didn’t look at all likely at the start of April after the 2-2 draw with Arsenal made it four matches without a win. A tweak to the system, however, saw Liverpool finish the season on an 11-game unbeaten run and this was enough for a Europa League spot.

It was a season of frustration for Klopp’s side. Injuries played a significant role, yet again, with Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz and Roberto Firmino, Thiago and Virgil Van Dijk all missing chunks of the campaign.

The Reds struggled for consistency and it became quickly apparent that the midfield lacked legs early on in the campaign. At one stage, Klopp even dropped Jordan Henderson and Fabinho due to their performances.

Despite this inconsistency, Liverpool did record a historic 7-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield.

It was an eye-opening campaign for the German tactician and this played a part in the summer business.

Mohamed Salah, as usual, finished as the team’s top scorer with 19 in the Premier League. The No.11 also chipped in with 12 assists to take his goal involvement tally to 31. It is a remarkable return given he was playing in a frenetic and chaotic team for large parts of the season. It is no surprise to find out he topped the FotMob chart for Liverpool player ratings with an average of 7.46. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s finish to the season in his new inverted role saw his average climb to 7.45 though.

What has happened during the summer?

Quite a lot.

James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino all left on free transfers while the Reds decided to cash in on Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. The captain joined Al-Ettifaq while the Brazilian destroyer made the move to Al-Ittihad and he will now partner N’Golo Kante in midfield.

Fabio Carvalho was also loaned out to RB Leipzig for the season.

The Reds, so far, have signed just two players. World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister joined from Brighton for a fee believed to be in the region of £35million while Dominik Szoboszlai swapped Leipzig for Merseyside after the 2019/20 Premier League champions agreed to pay his £60million release clause.

What they should be aiming for next season?

A top-four finish is the bare minimum. Liverpool have enough quality, even with all of these changes to the midfield, to claim a Champions League spot. They have one of the best attacking units in Europe and there should be enough goals to see them pick up the wins needed to get back into Europe’s premier club competition.

Anything other than that will be, rightly, viewed as a failure.

Premier League Predictions: Fulham

Premier League Predictions: Fulham

Fulham had been the definition of a yo-yo team over recent years. Every promotion was followed by a relegation, that was until last season. Under Marco Silva, the Cottagers finished comfortably mid-table and are playing Premier League football for a second successive campaign for the first time in a decade.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

Many expected Fulham to, once again, go straight back down. You can almost understand why, too.

Aleksandar Mitrović famously struggled in the English top-flight and scored just three goals during the 2020/21 campaign. The summer business didn’t look too exciting, on paper at least. They added Willian, João Palhinha, Andreas Pereira, Kevin Mbabu, Issa Diop and Bernd Leno.

Palhinha turned out to be one of the signings of the season and he’s now being linked with £60million moves away. Willian, who signed a new deal with the club this summer, finished with a FotMob average of 7.31, the highest in the Fulham team. And Mitrović found the back of the net on 14 occasions in what was comfortably his most productive season in the Premier League.

To say it was a successful season would be an understatement. Silva guided the side to a 10th-place finish. They picked up wins over Chelsea, their first since 2006, and Brighton, and also kicked off their campaign with a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Craven Cottage.

What has happened during the summer?

At the time of writing this, Fulham have managed to keep hold of Mitrović despite strong interest from Saudi Arabia. Silva also rejected the opportunity to manage Al-Ahli. The Cottagers did lose Manor Solomon though. The winger spent last season on loan at Craven Cottage and it looked as though he would join on a permanent basis on a free transfer. However, he opted to make the move to Spurs.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Demari Gray have been earmarked as possible replacements and Fulham are in talks with both right now.

They have signed Calvin Bassey from Ajax in what was a surprise move. The former Rangers defender had looked set to join Brighton as an alternative to Levi Colwill but it was Fulham who made the move for the 23-year-old for a reported £20million fee.

Raúl Jiménez has also been signed from Wolves, perhaps as a contingency plan for if Mitrović does depart towards the end of the window.

What they should be aiming for next season?

It will be difficult to improve on last season’s 10th-place finish, especially when the underlying numbers painted a picture of luck rather than anything else. Only Everton and Leeds United (67) had a higher Expected Goals conceded total. Fulham allowed the opposition to rack up an xG total of 65.6 but conceded just 53 goals. That sort of overperformance is not sustainable and if they’re as open as that defensively again, they are going to struggle. Those sorts of defensive numbers are usually associated with teams in a relegation battle. It could be a case of second-season syndrome for Silva’s men unless something dramatically changes.

Premier League Predictions: Everton

Premier League Predictions: Everton

It was a season of struggle for Everton last term. Having survived a relegation battle during the 2021/22 campaign, the expectation from many was that the 2022/23 season would be a little less stressful. This wasn’t the case though and it might be the same sort of season this time around.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

The Toffees finished 17th, two points clear of the drop. A run of form after the heavy loss to Arsenal in early March saved them from playing Championship football this season.

Frank Lampard started the season in charge but was sacked in January after only managing to pick up three victories. Sean Dyche was appointed and he guided Everton to five wins in his 18 matches at the helm.

Only Southampton (6) and Leeds United (7) won fewer matches than the Toffees. After the 4-0 loss to Arsenal, Everton claimed 15 points from 13 matches and this run included wins over Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth. They also salvaged a 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium in what was a must-not-lose match for Dyche’s men. That point was pivotal in keeping them in the English top-flight.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin out injured for most of the season, Dwight McNeil, a summer signing from Burnley, finished as Everton’s top goalscorer in the Premier League with seven strikes to his name. However, it was Alex Iwobi who finished the season with the highest FotMob rating (7.27) having chipped in with seven assists across the campaign from a variety of positions.

What has happened during the summer?

Dyche is working with a limited budget and, at the time of writing, the blue half of Merseyside are yet to part with any money this summer.

Arnaut Danjuma, having turned down a move to Goodison Park at the 11th hour in January, signed on loan from Villarreal. If he can recapture the form he showed during his debut campaign in LaLiga, he could be a serious threat for the Toffees this term. The 26-year-old scored 10 goals in 23 appearances for Villarreal and finished the season with 16 in all competitions around the time he was linked with Barcelona.

Ashley Young has also joined Everton on a free transfer following the expiration of his Aston Villa contract. He will provide this squad with some experience as well as versatility.

Those in charge of recruitment decided not to make Conor Coady’s loan move into a permanent one while Tom Davies and Yerry Mina both left on free transfers. This is a bit of a blow to Everton’s squad with Mina being a key player for the Toffees, despite his injury record.

Moise Kean finally joined Juventus on a permanent basis following his loan stint in Turin while Ellis Simms was signed by Coventry.

According to reports, Demari Gray could be heading to Fulham too. He was one of the more consistent attackers last term.

What they should be aiming for next season?

It could be another difficult campaign for Everton. It more than likely will be.

They are yet to address serious weaknesses within their squad, though they have managed to keep hold of some key individuals. A lot will be contingent on Calvert-Lewin being fit and firing.

Safety should be priority number one and if they’re able to get off to a good start then a mid-table finish should be looked at as viable.

Premier League Predictions: Crystal Palace

Premier League Predictions: Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace could be set for another season in mid-table. The Eagles haven’t done much in the transfer window but that is both a positive and a negative. It will be intriguing to see which way it pans out.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

It was something of an odd campaign for Crystal Palace. They finished in 11th place in the Premier League, one place better off than they managed in 2021/22 but having amassed fewer points.

Patrick Vieira was sacked after an inconsistent campaign and Roy Hodgson was drafted in to ensure the Eagles didn’t find themselves in a relegation scrap. There was a real threat of this at one stage before the former England manager masterminded a resurgent end to the season.

In their final 10 outings, Palace won five and picked up three draws. This was enough to comfortably distance themselves from the bottom three – they eventually finished 11 points clear of Leicester City in 18th.

At one stage, though, they were in freefall. After the Premier League resumed following the World Cup break, Palace managed just eight points from a possible 42. The only team they managed to beat during this 14-game stretch was Bournemouth.

The star players for the Eagles were Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise. The former topped the goals charts for the team with 10 while the latter racked up 11 assists, a total only Mohamed Salah (12) and Kevin De Bruyne (16) could better in the English top-flight.

It is no surprise to see both players finished with the highest FotMob averages in the Palace squad last season with Eze coming in at 7.27 and Olise at 7.25.

Both did their reputations a lot of good. It is why, despite the club’s struggles, Chelsea and Manchester City reportedly want Olise.

What has happened during the summer?

In truth, not a lot.

Crystal Palace signed Jefferson Lerma on a free transfer from Bournemouth and he’s the only arrival so far at Selhurst Park. He will bolster the midfield ranks but he’s by no means a game-changer. He’s a reliable, solid squad player.

At the time of writing, the Eagles are believed to have made a £20million offer for Matheus França of Flamengo. The young Brazilian had been a target for Chelsea and Newcastle but, if reports are correct, a move to Selhurst Park is now on the agenda (Editor’s note – this transfer has now been confirmed).

Despite being offered a new deal, Wilfried Zaha opted to end his stay with the club and sign for Galatasaray. His departure is a blow but Palace have done well to keep hold of Marc Guéhi, Olise, Eze and Cheick Doucouré despite interest from the Premier League big six.

What they should be aiming for next season?

They’ve managed to keep key players at the club but their inability to really strengthen could see them struggle. The likes of Olise and Eze are extremely talented but are they consistent enough to do it on a weekly basis? That is the big question heading into the new season.

A mid-table place should be the aim but Hodgson will be happy to just keep this group in the Premier League.

Premier League Predictions: Chelsea

Premier League Predictions: Chelsea

Chelsea head into the 2023/24 campaign as a big unknown. After a disappointing season last time out, coupled with a mass exodus of players this summer and glaring gaps in the squad yet to be addressed, there’s uncertainty over what to expect from the Blues this time out. Yet, despite all of this, writing them off would be naive.

By Sam McGuire

How the team did last season

To say the 2022/23 season didn’t go to plan would be a massive understatement. The Blues went big during the summer transfer window, the first of the Todd Boehly era, spending over £250million to bring in the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Kouliably, Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Thomas Tuchel was removed from his position as manager just six games into the campaign having picked up 10 points. Losses to Leeds United and Southampton during that period didn’t help his case to remain in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea then raided Brighton to bring in Graham Potter and a number of his backroom staff. He was unbeaten in his first five Premier League matches before going winless in the next five games. That erratic form continued until he was sacked in early April.

Frank Lampard saw out the season as interim boss, winning just one of his nine games in charge at the helm.

In the end, the Blues managed a 12th place finish having racked up just 44 points. They won just 11 of their 38 matches in the English top-flight and ended the campaign with a negative goal difference.

Even the January signings of Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernández, Noni Madueke and Benoît Badiashile couldn’t get them back on track.

Everyone struggled in the team. Kai Havertz finished as the club’s top scorer in the league with just seven goals to his name. To really hammer home how awful the season was, 38-year-old Thiago Silva finished with the highest FotMob average (7.23).

What has happened during the summer?

After being linked with a host of managers, the Blues finally settled on former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino. The 51-year-old had been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain in July 2022.

He will be looking to give Chelsea a clear identity, just as he did while at Spurs, but he’s had a tricky start to life at Stamford Bridge having lost a number of players this summer.

For starters, Kai Havertz joined Arsenal, Mason Mount moved to Manchester United, and Mateo Kovačić made the switch to Manchester City.

After just one year with the club, Kalidou Koulibaly left for a loss to join the exodus of players moving to Saudi Arabia along with Édouard Mendy and N’Golo Kante. Christian Pulisic signed with AC Milan while Aubameyang returned to France, joining Marseille. Despite being linked with Barcelona for the best part of 12 months, Cesar Azpilicueta left on a free to join Atlético Madrid.

More players are expected to depart before the new campaign gets underway.

Chelsea have lost a lot of experience this summer and they are yet to really replace it.

Christopher Nkunku joined from RB Leipzig while Nicolas Jackson made the move from Villarreal. Both have looked good in pre-season along with Angelo, an 18-year-old signing from Santos this summer.

They have so far failed in their pursuit of Moises Caicedo, though it feels like a matter of when and not if the Blues will strike a deal with Brighton.

What they should be aiming for next season?

After such an outlay over the previous 12 months, a European place needs to be viewed as a bare minimum, doesn’t it? Obviously, a Champions League spot is going to be the aim but it might not be possible this season unless everyone falls into place and there’s a huge slice of luck for Pochettino and his players. If they don’t get it, other teams are much further along with their project and have a settled squad, which gives them an advantage.
