Transfer Analysis: Fati, Balogun, Lukaku and more

Transfer Analysis: Fati, Balogun, Lukaku and more

With the transfer window coming to a close, clubs have been busy this week getting deals over the line. So here we have it. The final edition of the transfer round-up this summer. And, as expected, it is a bumper one.

By Sam McGuire

Jérémy Doku  – Rennes to Manchester City – Fee: £52million

This is one of the surprise moves of the summer. Having lost Riyad Mahrez, Man City looked to bring in an exciting winger to replace the former Leicester City man. They settled on Doku.

The 21-year-old is inconsistent in front of goal but a real menace in possession. For example, last season he completed 66% of his attempted dribbles. He also created 30 chances, chipped in with six goals and two assists across 1,285 minutes and finished the season with a 7.20 FotMob rating.

The Belgium international is already off the mark this campaign, scoring for Rennes on his way to a 7.68 rating. He’s a whirlwind on the right and he has the potential to be a real weapon for the treble winners under Pep Guardiola.

Gabriel Veiga – Celta Vigo to Al-Hilal – Fee: £34million

Courted by Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City after an impressive season with Celta Vigo, it looked as though Veiga would be off to Napoli until Al-Hilal hijacked the deal.

He finished the 2022/23 campaign with 15 goal involvements (four of which were assists) across 2,311 minutes in LaLiga. The 21-year-old created 28 chances, completed 53% of his attempted dribbles and found a teammate with 77% of his passes. Though he might not be a household name just yet, this should be viewed as quite the coup for the Saudi Super League club.

Cameron Archer – Aston Villa to Sheffield United – Fee: £18million

Sheffield United have quietly gone about adding to their squad over recent weeks in an attempt to bring it up to Premier League standard. While Archer might not be tried or tested in the English top tier, he is a genuine talent and his arrival should excite fans.

The former Villa man netted 11 times in the Championship last term while turning out for Middlesbrough, despite racking up an Expected Goals haul of just 6.37. He was a sharpshooter in the penalty area and he was even something of a creative force, creating 25 chances and assisting six goals. The 21-year-old missed just two big chances while on loan.

Mohammed Kudus – Ajax to West Ham – Fee: £39million

This has the potential to be one of the signings of the summer. Kudus almost joined Brighton earlier in the summer but he’s now a West Ham United player. The 23-year-old had been linked with a host of clubs prior to the move and it is quite the pull for the Hammers to bring him to the club.

Kudus can play as a wide attacker, as a centre-forward and even in midfield. His addition gives manager David Moyes a number of options. He scored 11 times last season in the Eredivisie in just 1,791 minutes. Kudus also created 29 chances and assisted three goals. It is going to be interesting to see how quickly he settles into the Premier League.

Beto – Udinese to Everton – Fee: £26million

Everton finally have a player other than Dominic Calvert-Lewin who can bear some of the attacking responsibility. Beto scored 10 goals last season in Serie A turning out for Udinese and the 25-year-old centre-forward is already off the mark for the Toffees having scored in the Carabao Cup.

His physicality and frame should suit a Sean Dyche team and his style should be well-suited to the rigorous of the Premier League. He could be a shrewd addition to the Everton team.

Carlos Baleba – Lille to Brighton – Fee: £23million

When Brighton make a move for a player, everyone should sit up and take notice. The Seagulls have spent some of the Moises Caicedo money to bring in Baleba from Lille. The 19-year-old doesn’t have much experience, appearing in just 471 Ligue 1 minutes last term, but there is clearly something there if Brighton have made their move. He finished the 2022/23 campaign with a pass completion rate of 84% while also completing 63% of his dribbles. He is definitely one to watch this season.

Folarin Balogun – Arsenal to Monaco – Fee: £34million

Linked with a host of clubs, Balogun had a number of options following his impressive loan stint with Reims last season. The 21-year-old scored 21 times in the French top flight last term and proved himself to be a real penalty box poacher with all of his goals arriving from inside the 18-yard box. He finished the campaign with an Expected Goals total of 26.57 to show his form was sustainable if given the same opportunities.

He could be the man to fire Monaco to a title challenge this term.

Benjamin Pavard – Bayern Munich to Inter – Fee: £26million

This is a good transfer for Inter. Pavard will likely excel in Simeone Inzaghi’s back three system and he was brought in for a fairly reasonable fee. The 27-year-old is a French World Cup winner who can play at centre-back or at right-back. He finished last season with a 7.55 FotMob rating, having looked fairly settled in the Bayern side. He found a teammate with 90% of his passes, made 43 headed clearances and 44 interceptions. Liked by Manchester United and Liverpool, Inter have bagged themselves a real bargain.

Romelu Lukaku – Chelsea to Roma – Fee: Loan

Lukaku is reunited with José Mourinho. Having played under him at Chelsea and Manchester United, the duo are once again working together at Roma. The Belgian forward spent last season on loan with Inter, scoring 10 goals and chipping in with six assists in 1,663 minutes in Serie A. The beaten Champions League finalists decided not to bring him back full-time and after talks with Juventus, the 30-year-old plumped for a move to the Italian capital.

Dean Henderson – Manchester United to Crystal Palace – Fee: £16million

Henderson spent last season on loan with Nottingham Forest making 18 starts and conceding 31 goals from an Expected Goals conceded total of 27.04. The 26-year-old has now joined Crystal Palace on a permanent basis and is expected to rival Vincente Guita for a place in Roy Hodgson’s starting XI in the short term before replacing the 36-year-old in the long term.

Bradley Barcola – Lyon to Paris Saint-Germain – Fee: £39million

PSG have been fairly active in the market this summer as they’ve looked to bolster Luis Enrique’s squad. Few would’ve expected to see Barcola make the move to the French capital from Lyon. The 20-year-old starlet was expected to make a big impression for OL this season and he was being watched by a number of Premier League sides ahead of a potential move next summer.

The versatile forward, who can play anywhere in attack, finished last season for Lyon with a 7.23 FotMob rating having scored five goals and assisted on eight occasions across 1,436 minutes. He is battling it out for minutes with some serious talent at PSG, if he manages to get into the first team on a regular basis it will be exciting to see how he develops.

Cole Palmer – Manchester City to Chelsea – Fee: £38million

Chelsea were linked with Jamal Musiala and Ansu Fati before they made their move for Manchester City academy graduate Palmer. The 21-year-old versatile attacker scored in the Community Shield and played a key role in the under-21 European Championships for England this summer. He was expected to get minutes at the Eithad this season following the sale of Mahrez but the arrival of Doku coupled with the big fee offered by Chelsea persuaded the reigning Premier League champions to part ways with him.

Matheus Nunes – Wolves to Manchester City – Fee: £53million

This move came out of nowhere. Pep Guardiola is a long-term admirer of the 25-year-old having been impressed with him when City faced off against Sporting in the Champions League. However, there had been no links until this week. The versatile midfielder can practically play anywhere across the midfield as well as as a wide player if required. His ball-carrying ability and the fact he’s so press-resistant is no doubt what appealed to the champions. It will be intriguing to see how he adapts following a disappointing spell with Wolves last term.

Ansu Fati – Barcelona to Brighton – Fee: Loan

This feels like a move right out of Football Manager. Fati was given the No. 10 jersey at Barcelona following the departure of Lionel Messi and he was tipped to be the new face of the club. Injuries have stalled his progress and the LaLiga champions needed to free up space in the squad this summer for further additions, so the 20-year-old was sacrificed. He’s joining Brighton on a season-long loan having reportedly rejected Spurs.

The exciting talent was involved in 10 goals in just 1,381 minutes last term and he could be a revelation under Roberto De Zerbi.

FIVE games to follow this weekend: Arsenal vs. Man Utd, Rangers vs. Celtic, and more

In this weekend preview we summarise the best five games to follow on your match feed. And make a couple of suggestions for matches that you may otherwise miss.

By Bill Biss

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Premier League: Arsenal vs. Manchester United

With the international break looming on the horizon, the Premier League have spread the pleasure over the next few days, with round four of the new campaign closing with the heavyweight clash between old rivals Arsenal and Manchester United, on Sunday afternoon.

These two sides dominated English football in the 1990s and in to the 2000s when this rivalry became one of the Premier League’s main draws. And now, with Arsenal looking to build on what was so close to being a successful 2022/23 season, and United still re-building under Erik ten Hag, we should be in for another top game.

Matches between the two have been full of goals in recent years – last season’s meetings ending in a 3-2 victory for Arsenal back in January, and a 3-1 win for United at Old Trafford last September. That was the only league defeat that the Gunners suffered from August until early February across a campaign in which they were beaten six times.

So far this season, United have won against Wolves and Nottingham Forest, coming back from 2-0 down last weekend, but have lost at Tottenham – the first of two trips to North London that have come in quick succession. Arsenal, on the other hand, remain unbeaten. They started with wins over Forest and Crystal Palace, but were held to a 2-2 draw by Fulham at the Emirates last time out.

Back in the summer, United beat Arsenal in a friendly game played in the United States – Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho scoring in a 2-0 win that was followed – for the sake of practice – by a penalty shootout, also won by United.

🇪🇸 LaLiga: Real Madrid vs. Getafe

Saturday also sees Real Madrid is action, as one of LaLiga’s giant teams welcome Getafe, from the neighbouring municipality, to the new-look Bernabéu. Indeed, this is the club’s first home game of the season, having agreed to start the campaign with three away fixtures to allow renovation work to be completed. On that note – our friend, the photographer Danny Last, visited the Bernabéu this week as part of The Tour, a project we’ve been running with Copa90, and you can view a selection of his images – here.

In terms of results thus far, Madrid are the only side in the division to have started with three wins from three; recording victories at Athletic Club, Almería, and Celta Vigo. Three games that have included four goals from new summer signing, England international, Jude Bellingham. Getafe come in to the weekend with a win, a loss, and a draw. Having survived a relegation scare last season, they started with an encouraging goalless draw against champions Barcelona but then lost heavily at Girona. But last time out, they were 1-0 winners over Deportivo Alavés thanks to a late penalty from main man Borja Mayoral.

Elsewhere, Barcelona will look to continue their unbeaten start away at Osasuna, on Sunday night.

🇮🇹 Serie A: Napoli vs. Lazio

Yes, Roma clash with early table toppers Milan on Friday night, but Saturday sees a battle between the sides who finished first and (a distant) second in Italy last season.

The defending champions host former manager, Maurizio Sarri, and his Lazio team at the Diego Maradona. In the corresponding game last season, played in March, the Romans left with a 1-0 win that temporarily delayed Napoli’s march to the Scudetto – one of only four defeats they suffered all season.

In the early stages of the new campaign however, Lazio have not been setting the world alight, suffering back-to-back defeats against Lecce and most recently, at home, to newly promoted Genoa. That contrasts with Napoli, who’s title defence under new coach Rudi Garcia has started with convincing wins over Frosinone and Sassuolo. Results made all the better by the fact that last season’s top scorer Victor Osimhen has already been firing – scoring three of the club’s five league goals to date.

🇩🇪 Bundesliga: Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. Bayern München

As you might expect for a side that boasts the experience of defending their title for 11 seasons in a row, Bayern have started the new Bundesliga season comfortably. First, Werder Bremen were dispatched 4-0, and then last weekend, that was followed with a 3-1 win over neighbours Augsburg, with both games featuring goals from new main striker, Harry Kane. And if you’ve seen the videos of him in lederhosen this week, you’ll know that he’s settling in to life in Germany on the field better than he is off of it.

But before we get carried away with the early season form, the Bundesliga have thrown a spanner in the works – an away trip to bogey team Borussia Mönchengladbach, just ahead of the international break! Gladbach are the one side seemingly to have Bayern’s number in recent years. In fact, they’re unbeaten against the champions in six meetings going back to 2021.

And if you look at the H2H record since the creation of the FotMob app (below), they have a very strong record against them.

However, Gladbach have started the season with some bizarre results – a 4-4 draw at Augsburg, a game in which they led 2-0 and 3-1 only to rescue a point with a stoppage time penalty, and a 3-0 defeat to a solid looking Leverkusen side. Having finished 10th in each of the last two seasons, another famous win over Bayern would be a fine way to kickstart Gladbach’s season under new coach Gerry Seoane.

🇫🇷 Ligue 1: Lyon vs. PSG

The big game of the Ligue 1 weekend falls on Sunday night, but it pits two sides struggling to find their form so far this season. Lyon come into their clash with PSG sat second bottom in the league and winless in their opening three games. That may change though, after American owner John Textor found a clever / devious way to get around ongoing transfer scrutiny from the French football authorities.

Lyon were able to bring exciting Ghanaian prospect Ernest Nuamah to the club this week, on loan from Belgian side RWD Molenbeek – a side also owned by John Textor – straight after Molenbeek bought Nuamah from Danish club Nordsjælland. The hype around Nuamah stems from the five goals he scored in the first four games of the season, in Denmark, which added to the 12 that the 19-year-old scored after breaking into the first team during 2022/23.

For their part, PSG, now under the management of Luis Enrique, have drawn twice and won only once, and currently sit eighth in the table. The champions racked up 36 shots but only one goal in draws against Lorient and Toulouse but did look a little better in last weekend’s 3-1 win over last season’s title rivals Lens. Kylian Mbappé started in that game and scored twice.

Plus two hidden gems from a little deeper in your match feed…

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scottish Premiership: Rangers vs. Celtic

Sunday also sees the first meeting of the Glasgow giants in the new SPFL season, with champions Celtic heading across the city to Ibrox.

The hosts may well still be smarting from their midweek 5-1 defeat at PSV in the Champions League qualifiers, a result that saw them enter Friday’s Europa League draw rather than the more lucrative, but ultimately, harder Champions League draw that featured Celtic on Thursday (they share a group with Feyenoord, Atlético Madrid, and Lazio).

But putting European distractions to the side for one moment, such an early meeting between the big two is a great opportunity for the winners to stamp their authority on the fledgling new campaign. Celtic have begun with two wins and a draw – at St. Johnstone last weekend – and currently sit top of the table on goal difference, while Rangers lie in fourth, having lost to Kilmarnock on the opening day, but with wins over Livingston and Ross County now under their belt.

🇺🇸 MLS: LAFC vs. Inter Miami

Bookending the weekend is perhaps the toughest test yet faced by the new look Inter Miami side following the Lionel Messi revolution. The Herons are unbeaten in 10 competitive games post-Messi and only Nashville, the side they beat in the Leagues Cup Final, but then played again in MLS during the week, that have managed to stop Argentina’s World Cup winning captain from finding the net during that run.

Now, Messi’s attempts to get Miami off the foot of the Eastern Conference continue with a long trip to LAFC, the defending MLS Cup champions, and the side currently sat second in the Western Conference. The Champions’ form was, however, looking patchy heading in to the Leagues Cup break, and they didn’t perform particularly well during that tournament, so their defeat at Charlotte last weekend can only have been a further blow.

It should be an intriguing match-up with LAFC looking to rekindle their form and Inter Miami still riding the wave, with Messi, Busquets, and Alba, bringing the best out of the rest of a squad that looked lost up until a month ago.

Premier League Matchday Four Preview

Premier League Matchday Four Preview

This is the last round of Premier League fixtures before the international break. Fortunately, we have a number of high-profile clashes that have the potential to dominate conversations for the next couple of weeks. With this in mind, a look at five key fixtures this weekend.

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

Kenilworth Road awaits

Having had their first home game of the season postponed, Luton Town are finally getting their Premier League campaign underway in front of home fans as they welcome West Ham United to Kenilworth Road on Friday night.

It is an interesting match-up. All of the pressure will be on the Hammers as they head into the game knowing a win takes them to the top of the Premier League after an impressive run of results. By comparison, Luton are one of four teams without a point to their name this term. It is safe to say they have struggled following their promotion.

Rob Edwards’ side have played one game fewer than most other teams yet have the fourth worst defensive record in the English top-flight, with an Expected Goals Conceded total of 6.3.

There are a number of interesting match-ups in this game. One, in particular, could well be Nayef Aguerd up against Elijah Adebayo. The West Ham centre-back should be back in the starting XI having served his one-game ban after being sent off against Chelsea. Adebayo tops the charts for fouls per 90 this term with 3.4. So expect a good tussle between those two.

Another six-pointer

Everton lost their first six-pointer of the season last weekend, falling to a late Wolves goal to lose 1-0. They travel to Sheffield United for the Saturday afternoon kick-off. The Blades are also without a win since returning to the Premier League but they did give Manchester City a good game in their last outing, losing to a late Rodri strike.

The Toffees are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League and have failed to score a single goal in their three outings so far this term. Sean Dyche’s side have missed the most big chances in the English top-flight (9) and in two of their games, the opposition goalkeeper has been the Player-of-the-Match. Everton haven’t had problems creating chances, they’ve just struggled to convert them. New signing Beto could be a solution to this particular problem. He got off the mark in the Carabao Cup and looked a real handful.

They are going to fancy their chances against Paul Heckingbottom’s side. Only Fulham have a higher xG conceded total, with the Blades allowing their opponents to create chances worth 6.9 goals.

Bouncebackability

Brighton welcome Newcastle United to the Amex on Saturday evening with both teams looking to get back on track after disappointing results last weekend.

Brighton’s 100% record came to an abrupt end against West Ham. The Hammers ran out 3-1 winners and caused all kinds of problems for Roberto De Zerbi’s men with their direct approach. The Seagulls looked extremely exposed on the counter and this could be a problem for them against Newcastle with Eddie Howe’s men possessing a lot of pace in their forward line.

Newcastle looked like the better team against Liverpool early on, even taking the lead through Anthony Gordon before Virgil van Dijk was sent off. The Magpies couldn’t make their dominance count and were caught twice on the break in the final 10 minutes to lose 2-1. The Champions League hopefuls are winless since their opening-day triumph over Aston Villa.

Both teams are going to want to get back on track. Expect lots of opportunities and both goalkeepers should be busy. Brighton have averaged the most shots on target this season (10) with Newcastle second on the list (7.3).

A big test for Liverpool

Aston Villa got off to the worst possible start this season, losing 5-1 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Since then, however, Unai Emery’s men have claimed back-to-back wins by an aggregate scoreline of 7-1. Only Brighton have scored more goals (9) while the Villans are second in the Premier League for Expected Goals (7.5).

They’re up against a weakened Liverpool side who are hoping to extend their unbeaten run in the English top tier to 15. The Reds are going to be without the injured Ibrahima Konaté and without the suspended Virgil van Dijk meaning Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will marshall the backline.

Jürgen Klopp’s men are yet to keep a clean sheet this term but have looked dangerous going forward. Four of their five forwards are off the mark with Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota already all off the mark.

This one has the potential for goals at both ends.

Old rivalries resumed

Whenever Arsenal come up against Manchester United, it is a game not to be missed.

The Red Devils completed a remarkable turnaround last weekend having been 2-0 down to Nottingham Forest within eight minutes. Bruno Fernandes scored the winner from the penalty spot to get United back to winning ways after the 2-0 loss to Spurs.

Arsenal had a difficult game against Fulham. They fell behind before taking the lead only to be pegged back late on. Despite dominating the ball and having a number of high-value opportunities, they could only manage a draw against Marco Silva’s side. If they are going to challenge for the title, this needs to be a blip rather than a habit.  A statement performance and result over Man United would send a message to rivals and it might be what is needed right now to settle down some nerves at the Emirates.

Erik Ten Hag will also be looking for a similar sort of response after an underwhelming start to the season from his side. What better way to silence critics than with a win against one of the title favourites?

Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo? Why Liverpool don’t need a ‘first-choice’ striker

Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo? Why Liverpool don’t need a ‘first-choice’ striker

For many, those 13 minutes plus stoppage time in which Darwin Núñez turned the game on its head at St James’ Park marked the moment he finally arrived as a Liverpool player.

By Jack Lusby, ThisIsAnfield.com

Nine touches, three accurate passes, two shots, two goals. Outperforming his xG by 1.57.

In truth, that would be a disservice to the year that came before it for a striker who, albeit not living up to the expectations of his £85 million price tag, delivered on a number of occasions for his new club.

Núñez scored 15 goals in 42 games in his first campaign on Merseyside, and along with four assists it meant he averaged a direct goal contribution every 124.5 minutes across all competitions.

There was a blistering cameo on his Premier League debut against Fulham, a winner against West Ham at Anfield, two goals from the left flank against Southampton, a brace in the 7-0 humiliation of Manchester United and a sumptuous touch and finish to cap a 6-1 mauling of Leeds.

In the Champions League, the Uruguayan netted in four consecutive games, culminating with a stunning flick beyond Thibaut Courtois in the eventual 5-2 loss to Real Madrid in the first leg of the last 16.

Núñez was never a flop, but the closing weeks of 2022/23 confirmed that he had yet to fully earn Jürgen Klopp’s trust. He started just three of a possible 12 games across April and May, missing three through injury. The manager repeatedly stressed that the “ticket” into his side was application off the ball – not just on it – and the signing of Cody Gakpo in January provided the prime example.

That set up the narrative of Núñez recapturing Klopp’s imagination with a star turn against Newcastle, with two goals from the bench to seal a 2-1 win for a side with 10 men, and has led to calls for the 24-year-old to reclaim his starting spot.

If Núñez is chaos, Gakpo has been calm and control. The Dutchman has proved a revelation since his £37 million arrival from PSV Eindhoven, joining as a prolific left winger and immediately converted to Roberto Firmino’s deep-dropping false nine role, adding his own slant standing 6’4” with delicate touch, close control and an eye for goal. A stark contrast to Núñez’s bulldozing brand of centre-forward play.

Núñez and Gakpo have shared the pitch on 18 occasions so far for Liverpool but are yet to combine for a goal, with there a growing sense that it is one or the other for Klopp’s starting lineup.

That raises the debate over who can earn first-choice status this season, inheriting the spot vacated by Firmino as part of an evolution in the Reds’ forward ranks.

In Núñez, Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota, Liverpool arguably boast the best attacking depth in Europe, with Klopp able to call upon five proven, elite-level forwards all with very different skillsets.

So far this season, Díaz and Salah have started all three games on either flank, while Jota took up centre-forward duties until Gakpo was able to step forward from midfield for the trip to Newcastle. Núñez’s drop down the pecking order was inarguable, but there is a wider belief that his impact at St James’ Park should change that.

The question of Núñez or Gakpo (or Jota, for that matter) in the central role should not have a binary answer, however.

Núñez should not take over from Gakpo, as such. More so that his brace on Tyneside serves as a reminder of the unique quality that he can offer both from the bench and as a starter. For Klopp, it will be further proof that he is able to chop and change his attacking trio for any particular challenge.

Núñez may have claimed the No. 9 shirt over the summer, but there is no longer a bona fide first choice within Liverpool’s ranks – and that should be seen as a positive.

“The thing is, it’s early in the season, we need to find stability, we need to find a formation, we need to get results,” Klopp told Sky Sports after the victory over Newcastle.

“And then we’ll play every three days anyway and everybody will play, there’s no doubt about that. Even if Darwin would have started the first three games, he would not have played more games afterwards because of the intensity. He can’t.”

The manager later added: “This is a completely new team, new key players, that’s how it is. So that needs time.”

An unbeaten start, including trips to both Stamford Bridge and St James’ Park, has given Liverpool the platform to build that stability. Perhaps now, with the likes of Thiago, Stefan Bajčetić and Curtis Jones returning to fitness and the prospect of further additions in midfield, Klopp can look to diversify his options.

Núñez’s explosive pace and movement off the shoulder of defenders does not suit the battle against a deep-sitting, organised defence, but as shown against Newcastle, he can thrive driving into space. The upcoming visit of Aston Villa, who employ a progressive, high line under Unai Emery, could be perfect for the Uruguayan.

But for those other challenges – such as the trip to Wolves after the international break – Liverpool may benefit more from the roaming interplay of Gakpo, with the likes of Salah and Díaz moving off him.

Having both options is of paramount importance, particularly for a campaign that includes a return to the Europa League and the tight turnaround between fixtures from Thursdays to Sundays. Watch Núñez shine in Europe, where the style of those encounters could play into his hands, while Gakpo is preferred for high-profile clashes with the likes of the Manchester clubs, where structure is key.

Liverpool have perhaps never boasted as much depth in their attacking ranks, and while it appears only three – four, at a push – can fit into the starting lineup at any one time, Klopp would never see this as a headache.

He doesn’t need to identify a ‘first choice’ up front. In Núñez, Gakpo and even Jota or Salah, he has solutions for every possible scenario.

MLS Matchday 28 Player Power Rankings

MLS Matchday 28 Player Power Rankings

Lionel Messi finally made his Major League Soccer debut this weekend having lit up the Leagues Cup and US Open Cup on his introduction to American soccer.

But he had to settle for a place on the bench as Tata Martino rotated his side against New York Red Bulls following a gruelling run of cup games.

It was the right decision, too, as Miami secured a 2-0 win with Messi coming off the bench to score a brilliant goal.

Messi’s fleeting involvement this week sees other players make up the five in our Player Power rankings, in what might be a rare occasion where the new star of the league is not included.

But it was also a reminder there are plenty of other entertaining players in MLS aside from Messi.

One of them being his Argentina World Cup winning teammate…

By James Nalton, MLS expert

Thiago Almada 9.6 (Atlanta United)

The 22-year-old Argentine is attracting interest from Europe and has most recently been linked to Ajax.

His performance in his side’s 4-0 win against Nashville showed exactly why he is being watched by teams across the pond.

He created nine chances throughout the game, assisting two goals and scoring one of his own.

His first assist was not dissimilar to Lionel Messi’s much-lauded second in the US Open Cup against Cincinnati, coming from the right of midfield rather than the left.

Almada picked the ball up in the middle of the park and swung a ball in for Xande Silva, just as Messi had done for Leonardo Campana a few days earlier.

The finish from Silva was more difficult than Campana’s, though, and he deserves plenty of credit for this goal.

Almada’s goal was a nice finish with the outside of the right boot, over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0, Silva repaying the favor with the assist.

Almada rounded off his night with an assist from a corner and also set up the fourth goal, but he didn’t officially get the assist as a Nashville defender intervened before the ball fell to Saba Lobzhanidze.

Almada completed 4/5 dribbles for good measure in a complete attacking performance.

Ryan Gauld 9.3 (Vancouver Whitecaps)

Vancouver’s Scottish attacker continued to impress in 2023, scoring twice and assisting the other in a 3-2 win at Cascadia rivals Portland.

He shows goalscoring instincts as well as creative ability, as demonstrated when he stole in at the back post to turn home a cross to open the scoring.

This has led to him playing a more advanced role alongside Brian White rather than being used from deep as a more traditional MLS playmaker.

Gauld showed good pace and crossing ability to reach the byline and set up White for a header, before converting a penalty to seal the win and mean Portland’s late goal was only a consolation for the home side.

Gauld now has nine goals and seven assists in MLS so far in 2023 as Vancouver looks to solidify their position in the playoff places as the regular season approaches its end.

Nemanja Radoja 9.0 (Sporting Kansas City)

Sporting KC might feel their results haven’t matched the quality of some of their players this season, and that’s often been because they haven’t quite clicked as a team.

But when they do they are able to beat anyone on their day, and put in one of the most convincing performances of Matchday 28 with a 3-0 win against San Jose.

Serbian midfielder Radoja completed 61 of his 65 passes on the night, giving him a pass success of 95%.

He also made three interceptions and seven recoveries and also assisted two of the goals.

Though these goals were more about the individual play of the attackers after receiving the ball from Radoja, it still showed his ability fo find players in space and in advantageous positions, recycling possession and keeping the ball for his team.

Luciano Acosta 8.6 (FC Cincinnati)

FC Cincinnati were back following the disappointing result last week that saw them exit the US Open Cup on penalties to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.

Cincinnati fans did themselves proud in that game, supporting their team rather than simply being in awe of Messi. There were even some boos for the league’s new star as the fans did everything to get behind their own players.

Acosta had left the field with cramp in his hamstring during the second half of the Open Cup game but was back in full flow in MLS to help his team to a 3-0 win against a struggling New York City side.

He didn’t get an assist for the first goal but it was his play, drawing half the NYCFC team to him before passing to Bret Halsey whose shot was saved. The space Acosta had made gave Aaron Boupendza the chance for a tap-in off the rebound.

For the second goal, Acosta led the counter-attack before checking, losing three defenders, and setting up Junior Moreno to fire home. The third came from his cross from a short corner, headed home by Nick Hagglund.

He’ll have a big shot to be the league’s MVP if his and Cincinnati’s league-leading form continues in this vein.

Ricqui Puig 8.8 (LA Galaxy)

Helped somewhat by a first-half red card to Chicago Fire’s Gastón Giménez, LA Galaxy were in control of this game throughout, at least in terms of possession.

Ricqui Puig played a big role in this dominance of the ball, completing a total of 110 passes for a pass success of 89%.

He also scored the team’s second goal which turned an unconvincing, shaky 1-0 scoreline against 10 men into one that better reflected their possession numbers, which were at 64% by the end of the game.

It was a composed finish from the edge of the area, placed inside the near post having found space.

Chicago still had their chances, which might worry the Galaxy, but they finished off the game with a late penalty scored by new signing Billy Sharp.

Premier League Matchday 3 Team of the Week

Premier League Matchday 3 Team of the Week

There are some new faces in the Team of the Week for matchday three. Here’s a breakdown of exactly why these players made the cut.

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

Goalkeeper: José Sá

For the second time in three weeks, Everton have been thwarted by a goalkeeper putting in a Man of the Match performance. During matchday one, Bernd Leno made nine saves for Fulham as Marco Silva’s side nicked 1-0 win.

This time it was Sá between the sticks for Wolves as Gary O’Neil got his first win in charge of the club. The 30-year-old made seven saves and faced shots with an Expected Goals on target total of 1.53. Remarkably, six of these saves arrived from shots in the penalty area as he was really put to work at Goodison Park on his way to a 9.0 FotMob rating.

Right-Back: Matty Cash

The Aston Villa right-back put on a finishing clinic in the 3-1 win over Burnley. Cash scored twice having taken six efforts from his new wing-back position. The 26-year-old also completed 100% of his dribbles, came out on top in 100% of his tackles and won seven of his 10 duels on the day. Unai Emery might’ve found a new role for the Poland international and he could well be tempted to stick with this system.

Centre-Back: Willy Boly

Boly may have been on the losing side as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to claim a 3-2 victory, but the 32-year-old certainly put in a shift at Old Trafford. He scored the second goal but that was just a bonus. He put in an eye-catching performance defensively. The versatile centre-back won three of his four tackles, made eight clearances, six-headed clearances, and won half of his aerial duels and 62% of his ground duels.

Centre-Back: Joachim Andersen

The 27-year-old put in quite the performance in Crystal Palace’s 1-1 draw with Brentford. Andersen, somehow, managed to make the most tackles (3) while also creating the most chances (4). He also completed 100% of his dribbles and was successful with 100% of his crosses. The Palace centre-back won all of his ground duels and involved himself in an incredible 11 aerial battles. To top things off, he netted the equaliser.

Left-Back: Emerson

West Ham United put on a counter-attacking masterclass in their 3-1 win over Brighton on Saturday. In order to execute this plan, they needed their defensive unit to be resilient and Emerson carried out his role perfectly. The 29-year-old left-back won 88% of his ground duels, made two interceptions and five clearances. Going forward, he got involved too. He hit the woodwork with his only effort of the game while also creating a big chance.

Centre-Midfield: Raheem Sterling

Mauricio Pochettino opted to use Sterling behind the striker for the visit of Luton Town. He was given more of a central role and it paid off. The new No.7 scored twice, had five shots and created two chances as Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners. The former Manchester City winger attempted five dribbles and involved himself in 13 ground duels. His performance earned him a 9.0 FotMob rating.

Centre-Midfield: Rodri

No Kevin De Bruyne? No problem for Manchester City. For the second time in three weeks, Rodri makes an appearance in our TOTW. He netted the winner against Sheffield United, lashing home a left-footed half-volley late on just as it looked as though the hosts had salvaged a point.

Rodri attempted 116 passes and found a teammate with 98%. He had five shots, completed 67% of his dribbles, recovered the ball on 12 occasions and won 100% of his tackles and aerial duels. He is a one-man midfield for the champions.

Centre-Midfield: Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes netted the winner from the penalty spot to complete a remarkable turnaround at Old Trafford. The hosts had trailed 2-0 before the Red Devils fought back to claim maximum points. The skipper scored and assisted, playing a key role in the three points being claimed. He also created three chances on the day and had a total of five shots. Fernandes was determined to take something from this game and he ensured his team did just that.

Centre-Forward: Bukayo Saka

Arsenal’s 100% record came to an abrupt end at home to Fulham with the away side snatching an unlikely draw with a late strike despite being down to 10 men. The star of the show for the hosts was Saka as the No.7 found the back of the net yet again. He also created four chances at the Emirates – the most of any player in the match – while also completing six of his nine attempted dribbles – another high for the game. Saka continues to thrive under the pressure of turning out for a team tipped for a title challenge.

Centre-Forward: Nicolas Jackson

Jackson is finally off the mark for Chelsea. The summer signing finished with more tackles (3) than shots (2) in the defeat to West Ham last weekend but he looked much more of a threat against Luton this time around. The 22-year-old created two chances and had five efforts on goal, testing the goalkeeper on three occasions. His goal was a straightforward one but one he definitely needed to kickstart his Chelsea career.

Centre-Forward: Darwin Núñez

Liverpool looked down and out against  Newcastle United. They were a goal down and a man down having lost captain Virgil van Dijk to a red card after just 28 minutes. The Reds kept themselves in the game though, with Alisson making an unbelievable save, before Jurgen Klopp unleashed Darwin Núñez off the bench with 13 minutes to play. The Liverpool No.9 found the back of the net with both of his efforts to complete a stunning turnaround and Klopp’s men returned to Merseyside with all three points.

Premier League Matchday Three Review

Premier League Matchday Three Review

The Premier League certainly lived up to the hype this weekend. There were shock results, standout performances and eye catching moments galore. Here’s a round-up of the biggest talking points.

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

Pochettino gets his first win as Chelsea manager

The Blues hosted Luton Town at Stamford Bridge with all of the pressure on them on Friday night.

Chelsea had failed to win either of their opening two fixtures and anything but three points against the newly promoted side would’ve been a disaster. They delivered though.

Raheem Sterling scored twice and Nicolas Jackson scored his first goal for the club. The hosts created five big chances and racked up an Expected Goals haul of 2.27 while limiting their opponents to just 0.44.

Sterling looked back to his best. The new Chelsea No.7 had five shots and created two chances on his way to a 9.0 FotMob rating.

Dropped points at the Emirates

Arsenal’s 100% record is now over. Mikel Arteta’s side could only manage a 2-2 draw with Fulham but to say the hosts were unlucky would be a bit of an understatement.

The Gunners had 19 shots, created five big chances and amassed an Expected Goals total of 3.2. By comparison, Marco Silva’s charges could only muster opportunities worth 0.56 Expected Goals.

Play that exact same game 100x over and Arsenal claim all three points most of the time at a canter.

Fulham keeper Bernd Leno haunted his former employers with eight saves. Bukayo Saka was the standout performer on the pitch though with three shots, four chances created and a goal.

A bit of a pattern with Fulham games this season is their inability to limit their opponents. No team has a higher Expected Goals conceded total (9.9).

The Old Trafford turnaround

Nottingham Forest stunned the Old Trafford faithful by taking a 2-0 lead inside of five minutes.

Taiwo Awoniyi sat down André Onana for the opener before Willy Boly added a second just two minutes later.

The away side then allowed the hosts back into the game. Bruno Fernandes pulled the strings, creating three chances, two big chances and scoring the winner via the penalty spot. It was a contentious award with many believing the foul on Marcus Rashford was on the soft side.

Forest also had a man sent off with Joe Worrall receiving his marching orders having brought down Fernandes. It did, however, look as though there was a covering defender. United won’t care though, they’ve managed to claim another three points.

The Seagulls are hammered

Brighton went into the game against West Ham as favourites. Roberto De Zerbi’s men were blown away though, losing 3-1 to what was a classic smash and grab tactic deployed by the Hammers.

James Ward-Prowse netted the opener, before a quickfire second half double from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio put the game to bed at around the hour mark.

Pascal Gross pulled one back for the hosts but it wasn’t enough to salvage anything.

The Seagulls have been ruthless so far this season but their underlying numbers, especially defensively, should be a concern. Only Fulham have a higher Expected Goals conceded total and West Ham managed to create opportunities worth 3.23 this weekend.

The sign of champions

On paper, Manchester City’s trip to Sheffield United should’ve been a routine three points for the reigning champions.

It was anything but, with Erling Haaland missing a penalty in the first half. Pep Guardiola’s men eventually took the lead through their No.9 but were pegged back in the 85th minute when Jayden Bogle equalised.

Just two minutes later though, the treble winners rallied to score the winner. Rodri proved himself to be a clutch player yet again, rifling home to complete a commanding performance.

The 27-year-old completed the most passes (108) and made the most tackles (three) while also taking five shots. He earned himself a FotMob rating of 9.1, proving himself to be the difference maker yet again this season. He’s really stepped up in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne.

Chaos at St James’ Park

Last season, Liverpool were the only team to do the double over Newcastle United. The Reds claimed a stoppage time win at Anfield while a Nick Pope red card in the reverse fixture killed off the game at 2-0.

This game had a stoppage time winner and a red card.

Anthony Gordon put the hosts ahead after a Trent Alexander-Arnold error before Virgil van Dijk was sent off for a last man challenge on Alexander Isak.

Newcastle appeared to be in complete control and forced Alisson into a career high seven Premier League saves. The hosts couldn’t add the all important second goal though and it cost them.

Darwin Núñez fired home the equaliser after the ball rather fortuitously fell his way. Then, in stoppage time, Mohamed Salah found the Liverpool No.9 with a fine pass and the former Benfica man rifled home the winner.

Newcastle will feel unlucky but it highlights the ruthlessness of the Premier League.

Premier League Matchday Three Preview

Premier League Matchday Three Preview

We may only be three weeks into the 2023/24 campaign but we have our first six-pointer of the season. Ahead of matchday three, a look at some of the biggest talking points.

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

The pressure mounts on Pochettino

A home match against Luton Town should be viewed as a banker for any club with European aspirations. All of the pressure is on Chelsea and manager Mauricio Pochettino heading into this game on Friday night.

The Blues are yet to win a game this season having drawn with Liverpool and lost to West Ham United. Pochettino needs to figure out a way to get his team firing, and quickly. In their 3-1 loss to the Hammers last weekend, Jackson Martinez won more tackles (3) than he had shots (2) and he failed to have an effort in the second half when the Blues were chasing the game. The former Villarreal man is the focal point of the attack and if he’s failing to threaten the opposition, Chelsea aren’t going to be a threat.

This isn’t necessarily a free hit for Luton but few expect them to take anything from a game at Stamford Bridge. There’s nothing for them to lose in this situation and everything for them to win. It is a perfect storm for a shock result, so let’s see if they can pull it off.

A chance to build momentum

Spurs have had a decent start to life under Ange Postecoglou. They drew their opener against Brentford and followed that up with a 2-0 win over Manchester United. By comparison, Andoni Iraola is still winless as Bournemouth boss. The Cherries picked up a point against West Ham to kick off their campaign and then, despite taking a shock lead at Anfield, they fell to a 3-1 defeat on Merseyside.

There have been signs of improvement though under the Spanish tactician and there’s a clear identity with their playing style. For example, they rank sixth in the Premier League for possessions won in the final third and this points to an aggressive high press. For a little context here, Spurs rank 10th for this metric.

Both teams are in the bottom half for Expected Goals so far this season. Spurs have mustered chances with a value of three while  Bournemouth have managed to create chances worth 2.7. It is going to be interesting to see how this game pans out with both teams no doubt wanting to assert their dominance on proceedings.

The six-pointer

Wolves and Everton head into this game propping up the table. Both teams are on zero points and suffered heavy defeats in their second matches of the season.

Gary O’Neil will feel a little unlucky though. His team have the fourth highest Expected Goals total in the Premier League (4.5) but have scored just once. They are also tied for the most big chances missed (5). The fact they’ve created this number of chances is all the more impressive when you consider they’ve come up against Manchester United and Brighton. They just aren’t able to convert their opportunities.

It is a similar story with Everton too. The Toffees are yet to score this season despite creating opportunities with an Expected Goals total of 3.4. They have also missed four big chances with a number of those coming in the 1-0 loss to Fulham. Sean Dyche’s side do have defensive issues though. They have an Expected Goals conceded total of 4.5, the second-highest in the league behind Fulham.

With the game being at Goodison Park, the pressure is on Everton to get something from this match. If they don’t, it could well be yet another struggle this season in the Premier League.

The Seagulls and The Hammers

Brighton are the form team in the Premier League. They’ve scored four goals in back-to-back games to kick off their campaign and they have the highest Expected Goals total in the English top-flight with 6.2.

Roberto De Zerbi’s men are averaging 10 shots on target per game, comfortably the most of any team in the Premier League. Solly March is the joint-top scorer in the league with three, Julio Encisco, Kaoru Mitoma and Pervis Estupiñán all have two assists – the most in the league – while the former has the highest FotMob average in the Premier League with 8.84.

Everything is just clicking the Seagulls but the visit of West Ham will be a tricky one for them to navigate. The Hammers are undefeated so far this season and ran out 3-1 winners over Chelsea in their last outing. They’re a threat from set pieces with James Ward-Prowse now responsible for dead ball situations.

One thing to note, however, is that David Moyes’ side Expected Goals battle against Bournemouth and Chelsea but came away with four points. They will need to shore things up defensively against a rampant Brighton team if they’re to get anything from this game.

Newcastle United versus Liverpool

Newcastle lost both times against Liverpool last season, falling to a 2-1 loss at Anfield and a 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park.

They are going to be looking to bounce back from the loss to Manchester City last weekend. Eddie Howe’s men did manage to limit the champions, with Pep Guardiola’s men creating chances with an xG of just over one. However, the flip side to that is that they failed to really threaten City.

Newcastle did run riot in their season opener in front of home fans, picking up a 5-1 win over Aston Villa. They are a threat at home and Liverpool will be wary of this.

Furthermore, the Magpies have created eight big chances this term, only Brighton (9) have managed more. Howe’s side have the most yellow cards (9) too, so that will be something to keep an eye on.

Liverpool fell behind to Bournemouth but bounced back to record a comfortable 3-1 win over the Cherries to take their tally for the season to four points. They will be with Alexis Mac Allister after the midfielder’s red card was overturned, so that is a positive for Jurgen Klopp.

Mohamed Salah has six goals and four assists against the Magpies in 12 appearances for Liverpool. He is without a goal against them in three matches though.

Why signing a centre-back is now more of a priority than a midfielder for Liverpool

Why signing a centre-back is now more of a priority than a midfielder for Liverpool

By Jack Lusby, ThisIsAnfield.com

With only days remaining in the summer transfer window, Liverpool fans could be forgiven for wondering if the club has done enough to solve its problems. So far, it stands at seven senior players out and three in as Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo comprise the rebuild.

Losing Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and, on loan, Fabio Carvalho, made bolstering the middle of the park an essential task.

But now, as the deadline approaches, Jurgen Klopp and the club’s recruitment staff should make another area of the pitch their priority – as signing a new centre-back is more important than a fourth midfielder.

Ideally, it will be both. Reports suggest that a “multi-functional” midfielder is still on the agenda, with the likes of OGC Nice’s Khephren Thuram, Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone obvious candidates.

However, those familiar with Klopp’s squad-building – and owners Fenway Sports Group’s risk-averse spending – will be aware that a smaller group with a reliable, versatile core is often the manager’s preference.

In Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Endo, Thiago, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic, Liverpool have seven midfielders for three positions – plus the option of dropping Cody Gakpo deeper as has been the case already this season.

All of those players will be afforded considerable game time over the course of the campaign, and Klopp can be assured that none will be left feeling like spare parts come May.

When it comes to his centre-back ranks, though, there is a clear shortage.

To explain this requires a brief summary of Liverpool’s new setup: though a 4-3-3 from kickoff, the hybrid role of Trent Alexander-Arnold means it becomes a 3-4-3 in possession, with the left-back becoming a third centre-back.

So when Alexander-Arnold pushes into midfield as is his remit, Andy Robertson moves alongside Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to form a three-man unit.

The flaws of this approach are hotly debated, but in plain terms, Liverpool now operate with three centre-backs – and unlike the midfield, where seven (or even eight) goes into three, Klopp only has five recognised centre-back options to cover three positions.

Van Dijk and Konate are the first-choice pairing; Robertson is first choice in the second hybrid role of left-back and centre-back; and Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are deputies for the central positions.

As recent seasons have taught us, Liverpool are one, frustratingly likely, injury away from a less-than-desirable defensive line.

Matip has already admitted that he “needs to adapt” to the new system, as he found when filling in for Konate that “the right-back will not be there in the first moment.” Meanwhile Gomez, who to many resembles a useful option in Robertson’s role, was overlooked entirely throughout pre-season, instead filling in for Alexander-Arnold as an orthodox right-back. Kostas Tsimikas has long served as backup left-back, but a move to centre-back is doubtful.

Both Gomez and Matip are capable top-level centre-backs, but there are doubts over whether they fit into Klopp’s new setup – whether raised by supporters or, in his selection, the manager himself.

If Konate picks up a long-term injury, then, Liverpool will require Matip to step in alongside Van Dijk. But as shown during pre-season, the 32-year-old Matip’s lack of pace can be exposed repeatedly as Konate is effectively needed to cover both centre-back and right-back in the defensive phase.

Having another, more suitable option candidate would relieve this concern, while retaining Matip and Gomez as useful squad players to allow Klopp to shuffle his pack in a season when Liverpool will enter the Europa League for the first time since 2015/16.

While this would suggest that Liverpool should be targeting another right-sided centre-back, this season runs the risk of an elephant entering the room in the shape of Robertson on the opposite side.

Widely considered one of the world’s best left-backs at his peak, Robertson is now nearing his 30th birthday, and though still a formidable presence going forward, the minutes in his legs looked to have taken their toll of late. Now, the Scotland captain is tasked with performing a new role but appears caught in two minds as to whether to stay in defence or barrel forward, as usual, into attack.

Unlike Konate on the opposite side, Robertson does not possess the dominant physicality to cover the wide spaces in a three-man unit, and though the hope is that he can eventually adjust, the early signs are that he is not a long-term solution at centre-back.

It certainly raises the question of whether the shift in system is worth diluting Robertson’s natural quality as a full-back, but as it stands, the 3-4-3 seems set to stay.

So, then, the priority may well become signing a more suitable candidate as centre-back – a left-sided Konate clone, if you will. The issue there, of course, is that it may prove much harder in practice than on paper.

Levi Colwill was the perfect candidate, only to commit his long-term future to Chelsea with a new six-year contract. Josko Gvardiol may have been an upgrade on Colwill even, but the Croatian joined Manchester City in a deal worth £77.6 million. Micky van de Ven, another player coveted among Klopp’s staff, headed to Tottenham for £43 million. Jurrien Timber, Lucas Hernandez, Castello Lukeba and even Aymeric Laporte have all switched clubs, too.

There remain options, with Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi and West Ham’s Nayef Aguerd all touted with moves to Merseyside in recent months, but Liverpool are seemingly not set on any of their mooted targets.

But in a summer in which so much rests on Liverpool’s ability to evolve, to not bring in another centre-back – to challenge or, at least eventually, replace Robertson on that left-hand side – would be negligent.

The same, familiar conundrum presents itself to Klopp and the higher-ups in FSG: can Liverpool really afford to wait for the perfect player for the long term again while risking the short term?

MLS Matchday 27 Player Power Rankings

MLS Matchday 27 Player Power Rankings

St. Louis City continue to lead the way at the top of Major League Soccer’s Western Conference following another standout performance on Matchday 27, and also edged closer to FC Cincinnati in the overall standings.

Houston Dynamo was arguably the standout team of this matchday, though, with a 5-0 win against Portland Timbers, but the individual performances were spread throughout the team rather than there being one particular star.

The Dynamo will be playing for a place in the US Open Cup final this week in a semifinal against Real Salt Lake.

The other semi features Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami against the stumbling FC Cincinnati

The league leaders found it difficult as MLS returned this week following the break for the Leagues Cup, falling 3-0 to Columbus Crew in the Hell Is Real derby.

A Crew player will feature later in the Player Power rankings for Matchday 27, but first up there was another masterful creative performance from one of the league’s best new additions in 2023.

By James Nalton, MLS expert

Eduard Löwen 9.7 (St. Louis City)

The St. Louis playmaker put on another creative clinic with an array of passing in various situations.

He assisted his team’s opener in a goal-filled 6-3 win against Austin FC via a familiar St. Louis set piece, headed in by Tim Parker.

As the first half reached added time, Löwen played a ball in behind the Austin defence to set Nicholas Gioacchini free, inviting the forward to make something happen. And he did, putting the home side 2-0 up at the half.

Six goals were scored in the second period, four of them by St. Louis.

Löwen went on to complete a hat-trick of assists with a nice reverse pass to Tomas Ostrak from the edge of the area.

Throughout the season the German has shown the numerous ways he can create chances, and potentially goals for his team.

In this game he combined them all, displaying a wide range of passing and creative threats to double his assists tally for the season.

Georgios Giakoumakis 9.1 (Atlanta United)

It was a promising start to this latest stage of the season for Atlanta United, and in Giakoumakis they have an out-and-out center forward who could become the best of his type in the league.

He headed home the opening goal from a Brooks Lennon corner, looking several feet taller than everyone else in the area as he leapt in the air to do so.

He perhaps should have scored again before halftime, missing an easy chance with his feet, but normal business resumed with his head—obviously his preferred way of scoring—when he rose to meet Thiago Almada’s cross for his and his team’s second.

It’s now 12 goals in MLS this year for Giakoumakis, which puts him just one behind the league’s top scorer, Hany Mukhtar.

Nicholas Gioacchini 9.0 (St. Louis City)

Löwen aside, the other attacking stars of St. Louis’ big win against Austin were Gioacchini and Samuel Adeniran. The former just edges it as the other entry in our Player Power rankings after both netted a brace.

Löwen’s ball behind the defence encouraged the run from Gioacchini for his first, putting him in a dangerous area in the opposition final third, but there was still plenty of work to do.

He stood up Julio Cascante before shooting low into the far corner. The ball went in off the post giving Austin goalie Brad Stuver no chance.

His second was a scrappier effort. Having done brilliantly to launch himself feet first at a cross that came in from Rasmus Alm, the resulting shot was well saved by Stuver, but Gioacchini showed desire and alertness to recover and beat Cascante to the loose ball.

Stuver had every right to expect more from his defenders having saved the first effort, but Gioacchini wasn’t standing on ceremony.

“I’m trying to go in each game trying to score goals, trying to help my team win,” Gioacchini said.

“I’m trying to win MLS Cup, that’s my goal, whether it’s me scoring or my teammates scoring.

“Obviously I want to be the one up top putting the ball in the net because that’s what they pay me to do, that’s my job, but as long as we get the three points at the end of the day, I’m happy.”

Aidan Morris 8.9 (Columbus Crew)

They call the meeting between Ohio clubs Columbus Crew and FC Cincinnati the Hell is Real derby, named after a sign that can be seen on Interstate 71 which connects the two cities.

Victory in such rivalry matches requires performances such as the one Morris put in for Columbus during a 3-0 win at home.

He set things off by firing a shot from distance past Roman Celentano with just 15 minutes played.

The ferocity of the strike and the intense celebrations that followed set the tone for the Columbus performance and win.

Morris was key to the third goal, too, evading a press in midfield before driving forward and finding the right pass to Christian Ramirez who set up Jacen Russell-Rowe to score.

“There is a lot of weight behind this game, it’s just not a regular MLS game,” Morris said.

“Right here tonight, for sure, that was a statement, especially 3-0. I think we know what colour Ohio is now.”

John Tolkin 8.1 (New York Red Bulls)

There is always something extra to a clash between these two MLS originals.

Though New York Red Bulls no longer bear the MetroStars name they began with in 1996, the history lives on and their meetings with DC United always bring a sense of rivalry.

There is little to separate the two sides in 2023. They are not as far up the table as they would like, though, having found themselves outside the playoff places fighting to get in.

There was little to separate them in this meeting, too, and the xG was a lowly 0.08 to 0.03 in the Red Bulls’ favour.

It was left to New Jersey native Tolkin to produce a moment of individual quality to break the deadlock.

The left-back had sent a shot just wide with an hour gone, and as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes it looked like these two sides would see out a 0-0 draw on their return to action.

Tolkin had other ideas. When the Red Bulls won a free kick on the left edge of the DC United box with three minutes of regulation time remaining, the position looked ideal for a right-footer to send a shot up and down over the wall.

Instead, Tolkin stepped up and curled it around the outside of the wall into the bottom corner with his left foot for his first goal of the season.

Tolkin said of his free kick: “I guess I’m taking notes from Messi these days, huh?”
