🇼đŸ‡č Serie A: Inter vs. Milan

As a way to kick-start the new campaign, after an international break that stalled all the momentum across Europe’s top leagues, Serie A’s decision to schedule the Derby della Madonnina for Saturday evening looks inspired.

Especially after the two Milan clubs played out that two-legged semi-final at the San Siro in the Champions League last season – games that rekindled a wider interest in the rivalry outside of Italian football circles.

The powers that be may not have expected the added factor that makes this particular Milan Derby all the more special – the solid start that both clubs have made to the new season. Both have three wins from three and Inter haven’t even conceded a goal thus far.

Simone Inzaghi’s side have enjoyed routine wins over Monza, and Cagliari, and they thrashed Fiorentina 4-0 just before the break. Lautaro MartĂnez has five goals to his name already and his new strike partner, Marcus Thuram is off the mark with a goal and two assists. And having triumphed in their last four meetings with their city rivals, the Nerazzurri will be extremely confident going in to what is a designated home game for them.

Milan have scored as many goals in their three wins, and arguably, have had the tougher set of games – a home fixture against Torino coming between trips to Bologna and Roma. They were in complete control of the latter game, in Rome, until Fikayo Tomori’s second yellow card added edge to the second half, but the held firm to run out 2-1 winners, with Roma’s goal coming deep in to stoppage time.

This game also comes ahead of the week in which the Champions League groups stages get underway – Milan are back at the San Siro for a clash with Newcastle on Tuesday, and Inter visit Real Sociedad on Wednesday.

đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș Bundesliga: Bayern MĂŒnchen vs. Bayer Leverkusen

The big Friday night game in Germany is an intriguing one. Similarly to the Milan Derby, it pits the early season pacesetters together, with both Bayern and Leverkusen having won all three of their games so far.

If anything, Thomas Tuchel’s reigning champions have looked better than they did at the end of the last campaign, boosted perhaps by the summer signing of Harry Kane. The England captain has three goals and one assist to his name already, with only a fully fit Alphonso Davies (average FotMob rating 8.62) and Leroy SanĂ© (8.40) outdoing him in our ratings. Before the international break, Bayern shook off a bit of unwanted recent history by winning at bogey club Gladbach, and now they return to action with another tough test.

Leverkusen sat second bottom of the table when current coach – and former Bayern player – Xabi Alonso took over last October and his first priority was to change the course of their season. He did so, with the club eventually ending the season in sixth. And now, that upward trend has continued – Leverkusen have only started a season with three wins twice before in their history, and they’ve never done it by scoring as many goals as they have this term. 11 in three is testament to Alonso’s tactical tweaks – with our partners at Stats Perfom citing changes both in and out of possession, and a marked increase in attacking intent. The signing of Victor Boniface looks inspired. The Nigerian burst on to the scene with his form at Belgian club Union St. Gilliose last season and he’s carried that on – scoring back-to-back braces in wins over Gladbach and Darmstadt, and notching two assists already.

đŸŽó §ó ąó „ó źó §ó ż Premier League: West Ham United vs. Manchester City

The Premier League returns with seven fixtures on Saturday, with one, a kind of alternative European Super Cup, as Champions League winners Manchester City travel to West Ham United, the winners of the Europa Conference League.

The fact that both have started the season unbeaten in four games makes this match up all the more interesting. David Moyes’ side have already beaten Luton and in-form Brighton away from home, and claimed a home win over Chelsea, while City have won all four of their fixtures – starting with a 3-0 win at Burnley, and most recently hitting five past Fulham as Erling Haaland netted the 18th hat-trick of his senior career.

Haaland only featured once for Norway during the international break, but he did score in the win against Georgia, and will have reported back to City fit and well.

City, obviously, boast the best defensive record in the league but the Hammers aren’t far behind them having conceded just four goals so far. And, according to most pundits, West Ham have not only not missed Declan Rice, the star player of their successful 2022/23 season, but have looked stronger without him. The huge sum paid by Arsenal for his services has funded reinforcements with real pedigree – James Ward-Prowse and Edson Álvarez have already changed the look of their midfield and we’ve yet to even see Ghanaian star Mohammed Kudas start a game following his move from Ajax.

đŸ‡Ș🇾 LaLiga: Barcelona vs. Real Betis

On Saturday night, Barcelona host Betis at their temporary home, the Estadi OlĂmpic LluĂs Companys, which sits on MontjuĂŻc, the hill that overlooks the city and was last remodelled for the 1992 summer Olympics. This will be just the second home game of the new campaign for the reigning champions, with Barça’s win against CĂĄdiz starting their current run of three consecutive victories that has also taken in road wins at both Villarreal and Osasuna.

Having conceded four goals in those two games, and required relatively late winners in each of them, coach Xavi will have been pleased to get through the transfer window and can now look forward to having a settled squad as he looks forward to not only this fixture, but the start of the Champions League group stages (Barça face Belgian Champions Royal Antwerp on Tuesday). Fans may be looking forward to home debuts for latest signings, João Cancelo and João Félix, both of whom enjoyed a successful international break with Portugal.

Betis currently sit seventh in the table, three points below their opponents, and have started their season with a tough set of fixtures – they won at Villarreal but then drew a blank against AtlĂ©tico Madrid and lost at Athletic Club. Before the international break, they secured a second win, at home to Rayo Vallecano. But now, ahead of their Europa League campaign, Los Verdiblancos will be looking for a positive result against a side they last beat back in December 2021.

đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Ligue 1: Lorient vs. Monaco

Granted, PSG could overtake them before they kick-off at Lorient on Sunday, but at the time of writing, the pacesetters in Ligue 1 are Monaco. With three wins, a draw, and a whopping 13 goals to their name, the side from the Principality are looking strong.

Under new coach Adolf HĂŒtter the club appear revitalised – regular goalscorer Wissam Ben Yedder is on form again (with four goals in four), but he’s now being ably assisted by Takumi Minamino, who has three goals and three assists. And Brazilian left-back Caio Henrique has already weighed in with four assists for his teammates.

Lorient, who showed a lot of promise last season, don’t appear to have suffered greatly from a high turnover of players over the summer window. They’ve already drawn away at PSG, drawn with Nice, and thrashed Lille. But they did have a setback ahead of the break, losing 3-0, at newly promoted Le Havre.

Having finished sixth last season, Monaco don’t have the distraction of European competition, and thus could be about to mount a serious title challenge. But to do that, they’ll need to win these types of games, away at one of the league’s more upwardly mobile sides.

Plus two hidden gems from a little deeper in your match feed…

đŸ‡ș🇾 MLS: LAFC vs. LA Galaxy

Over in CONCACAF, it’s derby weekend. And in MLS, that means we get the Hudson River Derby AND another edition of El TrĂĄfico on Saturday night. The matches between LAFC and LA Galaxy have, since the rivalry’s inception in 2018, always guaranteed goals, with both sides scoring in all but four of their 20 previous meetings.

LAFC currently sit third in the Western Conference and a play-off spot, and thus the chance to defend their 2022 MLS Cup title, looks set to be nailed on. For Galaxy though, a post-season birth is tantalisingly just out of their grasp at the moment – they sit 13th but four points short of Dallas in the all-important ninth and final play-off place. To grab a spot they’ll need to extend their current unbeaten run of four games.

Historically speaking though, Galaxy have the upper hand against their city rivals – and they’ve beaten them twice in the league, and in the US Open Cup already during 2023. The full head-to-head record is below.

đŸ‡ČđŸ‡œ Liga MX: AmĂ©rica vs. Chivas

South of the border, the big game in Mexico is the Superclåsico between age old rivals América, from Mexico City and Chivas, of Guadalajara. Including friendlies and unofficial meetings, this will reportedly be the 250th game between the two.

And the first since Chivas ran out victorious in a heated semi-final in the play-offs at the end of the last Clausura season back in May. The two had finished the regular campaign level on points but it was Guadalajara’s finest who won through to the championship final where they were eventually beaten by Tigres, after extra-time, at the end of a two-legged contest.

So far, in the new Apertura season, Chivas have amassed 13 points from seven games and sit fourth in the standings while AmĂ©rica, who’ve played a game less, sit sixth on 11 points. So expect a close contest at the iconic Estadio Azteca.

Premier League Matchday Five Preview

Premier League Matchday Five Preview

The Premier League is back this weekend after a short international break and the fixture list has been more than generous to us, with a number of high-profile matches to keep an eye on. Here, we take a look at some of the more intriguing match-ups.

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

Will form go out of the window?

The first game of the weekend is on Saturday afternoon and it pits Liverpool against Wolves. While the Reds will be without the suspended Virgil van Dijk, they are one of the form teams in the league. JĂŒrgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten in 15 and have taken 10 points from their opening four matches this term. By comparison, Wolves have won just three of their last 10 matches in the English top-flight. However, their sole win of the 2023/24 campaign did come on Merseyside as Gary O’Neil’s men defeated Everton late on.

Wolves have been surprisingly decent in attack, creating chances with an Expected Goals value of 6.7. Poor finishing has limited them to just four goals but you have to assume that this bad luck in front of goal will eventually come to an end – if they keep creating chances.

Pedro Neto’s performances have gone a little under the radar. After two injury-hit campaigns, the 23-year-old looks back to his best. He’s chipped in with three assists already and has created four big chances, the joint-most in the Premier League this season. With Liverpool potentially fielding a weakened backline, Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold are doubts, the Portugal international could be a difference-maker.

The best form of defence is attack?

You wouldn’t think it, but Manchester United and Brighton aren’t doing too well defensively this season. The Red Devils host the Seagulls on Saturday looking to make it three wins from three at Old Trafford, but this is going to be their toughest challenge on home turf so far.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side have the most goals in the Premier League this season (12) and have won three of their four matches. While they’re fairly potent going forward, they are yet to strike a balance and have struggled defensively. For context, only Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Fulham have a higher Expected Goals Conceded total in the English top-flight this term, with Brighton giving up chances worth 8.1.

United will look to exploit this. Though they are at home, expect them to look to make the most of their pace in attack by playing on the break. Defensively, they aren’t doing much better than the visitors, racking up an Expected Goals Against total of 7.6 across games against Wolves, Spurs, Nottingham Forest and Arsenal.

It might simply be a case of the team with the best attack on the day wins this, because going off what has happened so far this term, neither defence is going to hold up to too much scrutiny.

A top-of-the-table clash

Few would’ve envisioned this at the start of the season but West Ham United find themselves in fourth spot in the Premier League after four matches and they’re unbeaten. David Moyes’ men were dealt a difficult hand too, coming up against both Chelsea and Brighton in two of their three opening matches.

Yet they confidently dispatched both teams, racking up a 6-2 aggregate scoreline victory in the process.

They now host Manchester City knowing a win over the reigning champions could take them to the top of the table.

This particular match sees the two highest-rated FotMob players in the league, in Rodri, and James Ward-Prowse face off. The pair have an average rating of 8.37 this term and have proven to be difference-makers and match-winners in multiple games already. Whoever comes out on top in that battle could well decide the outcome of the game.

It looks set to be an interesting clash with both teams having fairly solid defensive units this season. City have the best defensive record in the English top-flight, conceding 0.5 goals per game. West Ham are third, averaging a goal against per game.

City will no doubt dominate the ball but the Hammers are one of the best counter-attacking teams in the league this season. It could be an entertaining 90 minutes.

Time for a reaction

Newcastle kicked off their 2023/24 season with an empathic win over Aston Villa at St James’ Park. However, Eddie Howe’s men haven’t picked up a single point since that game, losing to Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton. They need to add to those points on the board sooner rather than later and the Saturday evening match against Brentford is an ideal opportunity to put in a statement performance.

The Bees are unbeaten having won one and drawn three of their opening four matches. Thomas Frank’s side have had a deceptively good start to the season and are currently ranked first in the entire league for Expected Goals (10). Bryan Mbeumo is enjoying life as the main man and has four goals to his name.  He’s actually racked up the second-highest Expected Goals haul behind only Erling Haaland while Yoane Wissa is proving himself to be a real handful during his stint in the starting XI in place of the suspended Ivan Toney.

It won’t be easy for the Magpies on Saturday but they need to end this run of losses. If not, Howe might soon find himself under pressure despite his heroics with the team last season.

A sticky situation for Everton

Everton picked up their first point of the season prior to the international break after claiming a 2-2 draw with Sheffield United. They now welcome Arsenal to Goodison on Sunday looking for their first win of the campaign. In truth, Sean Dyche’s men have been unlucky. They’ve scored just two goals in the Premier League despite creating chances with an Expected Goals value of 7.3. The addition of Beto and Arnaut Danjuma should ease the over-reliance on Dominic Calvert-Lewin but these chances are, at some point, going to have to be converted otherwise the Toffees will find themselves in a relegation battle.

They’re coming up against an Arsenal team who have been in dominant form this season, despite their 2-2 draw with Fulham. They are ruthless in attack and are fairly resolute defensively.  It will be a tough ask for Everton, even at Goodison, but they did manage to cause an upset last season with a victory over the Gunners.

Liverpool were right to turn down world-record money for Mo Salah, but now must plan for the future

Liverpool were right to turn down world-record money for Mo Salah, but now must plan for the future

Whatever the figures on the table, Liverpool were prepared to hold firm and keep Mohamed Salah beyond the 10pm UK deadline set by the Saudi Pro League. A verbal offer worth up to £150 million was swiftly rejected by Mike Gordon, president of the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group, a week previous and suggestions of a world-record bid were given similarly short shrift.

By Jack Lusby, ThisIsAnfield.com

The timing of Al-Ittihad’s push to sign Salah, which dominated the final hours of the Premier League’s transfer window and kept Sky Sports and the tabloid press ticking over in the six days to follow, was questionable, particularly given accusations of sportwashing amid a summer of heavy spending from the Middle East.

But that, in Liverpool’s eyes, was besides the point: put simply, Salah was and is irreplaceable, with no sum of money worth losing him on deadline day with no chance of signing an adequate successor. Instead, despite the possibility of raking in £200 million for a 31-year-old with two years left on his contract, the club resolved it would be worth more to keep him at Anfield.

This is, after all, a player who has scored 188 times in just 306 appearances since his £43.9 million move from AS Roma in 2017, breaking countless records on the way to fifth spot among the club’s all-time leading goalscorers.

Not only that, but Salah is a player whose creativity is becoming a more crucial aspect of Liverpool’s play. In the first four games of the Premier League season, he has already created four big chances – at least three more than any of his team-mates – while he tops Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai (both 0.5) in terms of expected assists with 0.6.

In each of the past three seasons he has struck 30 or more goals while in each of the past two he has assisted 15 or more for team-mates. Already this campaign, Salah has two goals and two assists in four appearances, leading the Liverpool squad again.

Losing him at any point in the window would have been a seismic blow to Liverpool’s confidence and structure; a player they have relied upon for so long and who has grown into a leader among JĂŒrgen Klopp’s squad, even if he has rarely been handed the captain’s armband and was overlooked in favour of Alexander-Arnold when it came to the decision over Virgil van Dijk’s vice-captain.

Losing Salah on deadline day would have been fatal; losing him after the English deadline due to the overhanging Saudi Pro League transfer window would have been somehow even worse.

Beyond the impact on the squad, any sale of Salah would come at a significant off-field risk, too, not least due to the prize money his goals have helped accrue – Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final in 2022, for example, brought in ÂŁ106 million alone. Moreover, his marketability as one of the world’s best players and one of the most famous Arabic sportsmen is as beneficial to those on Merseyside as it would be those in Jeddah.

So FSG certainly deserve credit for not bowing to the financial pressure of a club backed by the Saudi royal family, and with both the player and his usually vocal agent keeping quiet amid speculation.

There is a growing acceptance that Salah will eventually be sold, though, despite the Egyptian himself expressing a desire to remain at Anfield for the rest of his career prior to signing a new three-year contract in 2022.

“If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career,” he told Sky Sports during negotiations. The revamp of the Saudi Pro League, and subsequent, big-money moves from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Neymar, Riyad Mahrez and former team-mates Sadio ManĂ©, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, may have changed things since then.

At the time, there were few options open to Salah, particularly as he claimed he couldn’t see himself “ever playing against Liverpool,” with the pool likely limited to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. Now, any of those sides owned by the Public Investment Fund – Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr and Al Hilal – represent feasible destinations for a player who would arrive as the biggest of all draws.

There is also a growing feeling that next summer will be the right time for Liverpool to allow their legendary No. 11 to move on, particularly if similar offers are presented to them. By the end of the current campaign, Salah will be 32 and with 12 months remaining on a club-record contract worth ÂŁ350,000 a week. A decision will be required over whether to present him with a new and likely significantly improved deal, sell or allow the player to stay for a final season before departing on a free transfer. At that point, it may no longer make sense for FSG to retain their asset regardless of the financial incentives tied to keeping him.

In a way, then, in rejecting Al-Ittihad, Liverpool have bought time to plot a succession plan. They cannot leave themselves in the position with Salah that they found themselves in when Henderson and Fabinho departed in the summer just gone, when they were forced into reactive, rather than proactive, signings. Whether Salah is to leave or not, recruitment staff should be tasked with identifying his replacement long before he moves on.

That may be easier said than done, with the likes of Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), Michael Olise (Crystal Palace), Johan Bakayoko (PSV Eindhoven) and Moussa Diaby (Aston Villa) floated as early possibilities – along with, of course, Kylian Mbappe. There are certainly options out there, with those mentioned all convincing cases along with the likes of Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo, but the reality is that there are few, if any, who directly measure up to Salah. There has long been a sense that Liverpool would prefer to nurture his successor in house, with Kaide Gordon before his 19-month injury layoff and Ben Doak now breaking through, but would either be ready to make the step up by 2024?

Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia may be the prime candidate, but even he is a more natural left winger, a position for which Liverpool already boast Luis DĂaz, Darwin NĂșñez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo as options.

The presence of those four could, however, serve as evidence of the succession plan already in effect – or, more appropriately, another solution to filling the void if Salah were to move on.

Few players are capable of producing in front of goal as consistently as Salah has for Liverpool, and therefore the best route may be to replace him in the aggregate. If there are no players on the market who can score 30 or more goals every season, Klopp will for example need two who can score 20 or more or three who can score 15 or more, every season, to adapt, evolve and improve.

In NĂșñez, Gakpo, Jota and DĂaz, that may already be the case, while the development of Dominik Szoboszlai in the right-sided midfield role could provide another fix. But a player like Mbeumo, Bakayoko or, ideally, Kvaratskhelia would still be required to cover the losses if Salah departed.

Fortunately, Liverpool’s ferocity in talks with Al-Ittihad has ensured the luxury of time to put the pieces in place – as whether in January, next summer or even in 2025, eventually Salah will need to be replaced.

MLS Matchday 31 Player Power Rankings

MLS Matchday 31 Player Power Rankings

One of the quirks of Major League Soccer is that many of its clubs will carry on regardless during international breaks.

This was one such week. With much of the rest of the world’s top-tier men’s domestic leagues on a break, MLS provided some club football on a weekend of internationals.

It was a truncated matchday with just five games, but this smaller number of fixtures, combined with players on international duty, can offer a chance to see some teams and players who might not usually take the spotlight.

Here are five players who stood out on Matchday 31 as the post-season playoffs loom.

By James Nalton, MLS expert

Leonardo Campana 9.1 (Inter Miami)

Inter Miami were missing nine players due to international call-ups – more than any team in MLS – for their game against Sporting Kansas City, including Lionel Messi. .

The question was not just how Miami would cope on the field in the absence of Messi and others, but also whether the crowd would turn out in similar numbers for this Messi-less home game.

Both tests were passed. The attendance at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale remained at over 19,000, and though it was still the lowest home crowd of the Messi era, it was only by 1000 or so.

Despite going behind early on to a Daniel Salloi goal, Inter Miami rallied to a 3-2 win.

Campana scored two before halftime to put Miami in the driving seat before 21-year-old Argentine Facundo FarĂas made it 3-1.

Alan Pulido pulled one back for Sporting KC with around ten minutes to go, but Tata Martino’s Inter Miami ultimately showed they could get the job done without Messi.

Having Sergio Busquets, whose quick thinking at a free kick led to the third goal, and Jordi Alba to call upon certainly helped, but it was the goals of Campana that propelled them to victory.

Daniel 8.6 (San Jose Earthquakes)

Daniel has already featured a couple of times in our MLS Player Power rankings thanks to his ability to singlehandedly keep his San Jose side out of trouble.

This is reflected in some of the more advanced goalkeeping stats such as goals prevented, which takes the expected goals on target (xGOT) data minus the number of actual goals conceded.

The result usually gives you an idea of which goalkeepers are saving difficult shots, lots of shots, and maybe getting a bit lucky, too.

As a season rolls on, the luck aspect can become less of a factor as the sample size and minutes played increase.

Daniel is up there with the much-lauded Roman BĂŒrki of St. Louis as the best in MLS at preventing goals.

Having played fewer minutes than BĂŒrki, when looking at this stat on a per game, or per 90 minutes basis, Daniel is the best in the league.

This was on show in the game against a DC United side that created plenty of chances but just couldn’t get past Daniel.

He faced a total xG of 1.92 (xGOT of 1.05) and kept a clean sheet, making eight saves. DC would look to poor finishing as the main issue, but Daniel certainly played a big part in keeping them out.

Claudio Bravo 8.7 and Larrys Mabiala 8.2 (Portland Timbers)

Two new names for this season’s Player Power rankings, and a team that has barely featured in this column apart from maybe when other players are scoring against them.

The Timbers have the worst defence in MLS having conceded 44 goals, more than any other team across both conferences, but this week they kept a clean sheet against Los Angeles FC in a 2-0 win. Both goals came from members of their defensive line.

Mabiala took advantage of an error from John McCarthy, heading home from close range after the LAFC goalkeeper failed to deal with a corner.

Then in the second half, Bravo played a ball forward, continued his run, ended up inside the LAFC box and executed a nice left-footed finish from near the penalty spot.

It was his only touch in the area in the entire game, but it brought the goal that confirmed the Timbers’ win against last season’s champions.

Despite their defensive troubles this season, Portland still have a chance of reaching the post-season.

With six games to play, they might be relying on those around them, such as FC Dallas, Austin FC, Sporting KC, and LA Galaxy, dropping points, but a late surge would likely be enough.

Carles Gil 8.4 (New England Revolution)

It has been a turbulent few weeks for the New England Revolution.

The club has one win in four since returning to MLS action following the Leagues Cup, but it remains the third-best team in the league according to the overall table and also has a game in hand on the second-place team, St. Louis City.

This weekend, the club’s veteran MLS head coach Bruce Arena resigned as the league investigates allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate remarks” he made.

In a more recent statement, the league said: “As a result of the investigation which confirmed certain of these allegations, should Arena wish to pursue future employment within MLS, he must first submit a petition to the Commissioner.”

Arena had resigned shortly after this matchday’s 1-1 draw with Minnesota United.

“I know that I have made some mistakes and moving forward I plan to spend some time reflecting on this situation and taking corrective steps to address what has transpired,” Arena said in a statement of his own.

On the pitch, the Revolution looked to be heading for a 1-0 win in Saint Paul, Minnesota, thanks to Carles Gil’s first-half goal, but Franco Fragapane scored an added-time equaliser to add to New England’s difficulties.

FIVE games to follow this weekend: Euro Qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, and more

FIVE games to follow this weekend: Euro Qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, and more

In this weekend preview we summarise the best five games to follow on your match feed. And make a couple of suggestions for matches that you may otherwise miss.

By Bill Biss

CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers: Brazil vs. Bolivia

Believe it or not, but the qualifying process for the 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, has already begun in South America! And following on from Argentina’s 1-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday, it’s the turn of rivals Brazil to perform on Friday evening.

Since being knocked out of the 2022 finals at the quarter-final stage last December, Brazil have played just three friendlies, all against African nations – beating Guinea but losing to both Morocco and Senegal. Now they have to chance to return to home soil to protect their long-standing record of never having lost a World Cup qualifier in Brazil! And against Bolivia, a nation that haven’t won an away qualifier since way back in 1993! So it might be fair to call this one a home banker…

The Seleção are under the temporary management of Fernando Diniz, who will attempt to lay the groundwork for Carlo Ancelotti, who joins next year, and will look to maintain the nation’s other key record – the fact that they’ve qualified for every World Cup in history. Diniz is also the coach of club side Fluminense, who are enjoying an impressive BrasileirĂŁo campaign, sitting fifth in the table at the time of writing.

EURO 2024 Qualifiers: Ukraine vs. England

England start the second half of their Euros qualifying group with a trip to play Ukraine in the Polish city of WrocƂaw on Saturday night. Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions have, as we’ve become accustomed to in recent times, remained unbeaten so far – scoring 15 goals and conceding just once in four wins against Italy, Ukraine, North Macedonia, and Malta.

Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka were on the scoresheet in the earlier fixture with Ukraine and they’ve been England’s standout performers, scoring nine goals between them, and averaging a FotMob rating of 8.28 and 8.26 respectively.

Ukraine are by no means out of the running for a place at next year’s finals and they currently sit second in the group having won the other two games that they’ve played so far. This international break is hugely important for the nation – not least in terms of what relief and distraction football can bring a country at war – but also as a football team that wants to be successful. After this meeting with England they face defending European champions Italy.

EURO 2024 Qualifiers: Cyprus vs. Scotland

On Friday night, Scotland have the chance to go five for five in their qualifying group for next year’s European Championship. And claim three of the five points they need to qualify for said finals, taking place in Germany. In fact, there’s a combination of results (win tonight + Spain beating Georgia tonight + Georgia drawing with Norway next Tuesday) that would allow Scotland to celebrate qualification when they line up for the home friendly against the Auld Enemy (England) that same night.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – Steve Clarke’s side can go to Cyprus full of confidence but they need to back up those impressive results against Georgia and Norway in June, and of course, the win against Spain back in March. Which itself, came just days after Scotland beat Cyprus 3-0 in the first group game between the two.

Scott McTominay scored twice that night and has five to his name already in this group but he’ll come in to the game having played just seven Premier League minutes for Manchester United this season.

EURO 2024 Qualifiers: North Macedonia vs. Italy

Moving back to Saturday night’s action, and in another key Euro qualifier, Italy face something of a grudge match against North Macedonia.

It was the Macedonians that stopped the 2020 European Champions from reaching last year’s World Cup finals, beating them 1-0 in what was a play-off game, one that had offered Italy a second chance of qualification following an unbeaten but stuttering campaign in their original group. Aside from making it to the last Euros, that result was undoubtably the biggest moment in the country’s relatively young football history.

For Italy, this game comes at a difficult time after the shock resignation of coach Roberto Mancini last month (he’s taken the Saudi Arabia national team job). Mancini had generally overseen a successful period – there was the record 37 game unbeaten run that took in the victory at the Euros. But then, there was also the failure to reach the World Cup finals, defeat to England in their opening qualifier in this group, and the disappointment at June’s Nations League Finals.

He has been replaced by Luciano Spalletti, the man who led Napoli to that glorious Scudetto in Serie A last season, before deciding he wanted to take a well-earned break from the game. It turns out that break lasted just a couple of months and he now has arguably the most important job of his career. And the Azzurri have the chance of a fresh start.

AFCON 2023 Qualifiers: Senegal vs. Rwanda

The final round of group games in the qualification process for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has been ongoing for the past few days and that will come to a close over the weekend. On Saturday, we’ll see if reigning African champions Senegal, who have already qualified for the finals (which are confusingly being held in January 2024), can remain unbeaten in their group.

For this game, the Lions of Teranga meet The Wasps of Rwanda, a side who are resigned to finishing bottom of the group with no chance of moving up a place. The Rwandans have yet to win a game in this qualifying cycle but they came close against Benin back in March, and they only lost the previous meeting with Senegal after conceding a 98th minute penalty that was converted by Sadio Mané.

Interestingly, there are reports that ManĂ©, who now plys his trade in the Saudi league, could line-up alongside teenage sensation Amara Diouf. The 15-year-old domestically based player captained the nation’s U17 team to a junior Cup of Nations title earlier this year and has now been called up to the senior side for the first time.

Plus two hidden gems from a little deeper in your match feed…

MLS: Inter Miami vs. Sporting Kansas City

As usual, when most top flight leagues in world football are on hold for the international break, Major League Soccer continues regardless. And on Saturday night, Inter Miami will have to play their first Messi-less game since the arrival of the Argentinian icon.

Bottom of the Eastern Conference prior to the league’s transfer window, Miami have since gone 11 games unbeaten, won the Leagues Cup, and moved up one place in the table – with last week’s 3-1 win at MLS Cup holders LAFC being a watershed moment for the franchise.

They’ll come up against a Kansas side who are also high on confidence after returning to league play with back-to-back wins following the Leagues Cup break. That includes last week’s 2-1 triumph over Western Conference table toppers St. Louis City, a game that featured a brace from designated player Alan Pulido.

The Mexican striker is in line to start this game and with 12 goals for the season, he’ll be looking forward to facing a Herons side that will not only be without Messi but also seven other internationals, including in-form USMNT goalkeeper Drake Callender.

MLS: LA Galaxy vs. St. Louis City

Elsewhere, on Sunday night, the aforementioned, and surprise Western Conference leaders, St. Louis City travel to LA Galaxy. Despite that defeat to rivals Kansas, the league’s newest side still boast a six point lead in the table and should be close to clinching a place in the play-offs at the first time of asking – IF they can get past the Galaxy.

Sunday’s hosts have been revitalised in recent weeks with memories of their poor start to the year now being put behind them. They’ve lost just one league game since the start of June and although they still sit second bottom of the conference, they’re only five points short of the play-off places. The in-form Riqui Puig has been central to their recent success, picking up three FotMob MOTM awards, and scoring twice in his last four appearances.

How good is Dominik Szoboszlai? Why his early season promise has seen Liverpool move swiftly on

How good is Dominik Szoboszlai? Why his early season promise has seen Liverpool move swiftly on

Buried in the ludicrous, baffling logic of Jordan Henderson’s recent interview with The Athletic, in which he attempted to explain his decision to leave Liverpool for the riches of Saudi Arabia and Al Ettifaq while sacrificing the reputation built up over 12 years on Merseyside, there was an element of black comedy.

By Jack Lusby, ThisIsAnfield.com

“I won’t go into detail about the conversation because it’s private, but it put me in a position where I knew that I wasn’t going to be playing as much,” he said of a conversation with JĂŒrgen Klopp in pre-season that “sent alarm bells ringing” over his role. “I knew there were going to be new players coming in my position.”

Henderson later added: “That’s not to say that they forced me out of the club or they were saying they wanted me to leave but at no point did I feel wanted by the club or anyone to stay.”

Having arrived at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre for the start of preparations for what would be his 13th season with the club, after working tirelessly to improve his physique during the off-season, he was greeted by the eager smile of Dominik Szoboszlai.

Arriving on the same day of pre-season, the two midfielders could not have been in more contrasting situations.

A ÂŁ60 million signing from RB Leipzig, the Hungary captain was, for all intents and purposes, the Henderson replacement many fans had long called out for; the 33-year-old a punchline as he looked to convince himself a move to the Saudi Pro League was not, in fact, motivated by money.

It may be early days for Szoboszlai, but he looks every bit the upgrade on Henderson as Liverpool’s new right-sided midfielder.

A stud in the No. 8 shirt, the Red Bull alumni is also swiftly erasing mixed memories of Naby Keita’s stint wearing the number made iconic by Steven Gerrard.

It has come, too, in perhaps a slightly different role than many expected upon his move from the Bundesliga, having scored 20 goals and laid on 22 assists in 91 games for Leipzig while primarily operating as one of two No. 10s or on the right wing.

The signings of Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister suggested that Klopp could be planning to flood the final third with his new system incorporating a box midfield, but both have served as all-round midfielders instead.

Starting all four games for Liverpool so far this season, much of the 22-year-old’s best work has, in fact, come in ensuring structure as part of a new-look side still searching for it. For example, Andy Robertson, with 34, is the only player so far to record more ball recoveries than Szoboszlai, who is tied with Mac Allister on 26.

He was central to finding stability against both Bournemouth and Newcastle when, following red cards to Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk respectively, Liverpool were forced to change shape and he was required to sit in as part of a two-man midfield.

“He was the only one who really felt like he had power for more, because he was part of the double six and running everywhere,” Klopp said of Szoboszlai following a relentless display in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth that saw Mac Allister wrongly dismissed.

“I had to hold him back a little bit!”

Only full-backs Robertson (349) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (286) have had more touches of the ball than his 268, which matches up when it comes to passes completed – Robertson’s tally is 256, Alexander-Arnold’s 189 and Szoboszlai’s 186.

Of players to clock at least 180 minutes on the pitch over those four fixtures, only centre-backs Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate (both 89.7%) have a higher pass success rate than the Hungarian (86.1%).

That those players are primarily defensive and Szoboszlai’s remit is, fundamentally, to support the attack makes his output all the more impressive – particularly as he has also lent himself outstandingly to the attacking cause.

Alexander-Arnold, with nine, is the only Liverpool player to create more chances, as Szoboszlai matches Mohamed Salah with seven. Only Luis DĂaz, with 2.1, averages more successful dribbles per 90 minutes than his 1.8. And though he is yet to register a definition assist, he is behind only Salah (0.6) when it comes to expected assists, of which he has 0.5.

Szoboszlai is also up there when it comes to shots on goal, with only Darwin NĂșñez (7.6), Salah (3.7), Diogo Jota (3.2) and DĂaz (3.1) – all, it must be said, members of the forward line – looking to test the goalkeeper more times on average than the midfielder’s two per 90.

One of those led to a goal from Jota in the victory over Bournemouth, Szoboszlai’s drive palmed out into the path of his team-mate during a game in which he also won the opening penalty; another, three minutes into the visit of Aston Villa to Anfield, resulted in a sensational goal of his own.

The purity of his first-time strike, gliding in off his left foot through a throng of bodies following Alexander-Arnold’s corner, revealed the technique that has left Hungary manager Marco Rossi convinced he has only seen “five players in the last 50 years that have a shot like him.”

Watching Szoboszlai wheel away before pulling off a textbook knee slide, the No. 8 adorning his back, brought back vivid memories of a player who could very comfortably make that five-man list: Gerrard himself.

Only turning 23 in October, the Reds look to have acquired a gem in Szoboszlai, a 6’1”, all-action midfielder, composed on the ball, with an eye for goal and – to borrow the words of Dirk Kuyt when describing another former Liverpool midfielder, Gini Wijnaldum – the lungs of a horse.

That he is only four games into his career at Anfield and is already showing such promise is tantalising, with the glow-up from Henderson’s tired stasis to Szoboszlai’s boundless potential one Klopp’s midfield had been desperate for.

MLS Matchday 30 Player Power Rankings

MLS Matchday 30 Player Power Rankings

All eyes were on Los Angeles where the celebrity guest list in the VIP area at LAFC’s BMO Stadium was longer than its ever been in Major League Soccer.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Liam Gallagher, Nas, LeBron James, Leonardo DiCaprio and members of Rage Against The Machine were among those in attendance.

They were there to see Inter Miami and Lionel Messi and weren’t disappointed, unless, like LAFC owner Will Ferrell and, apparently, Prince Harry, they were there supporting the home team.

There were several performances in MLS Matchday 30 at least as good as Messi’s, starting with a perfect hat-trick in Montreal, from Columbus Crew’s star striker.

By James Nalton, MLS expert

Cucho HernĂĄndez 9.7 (Columbus Crew)

Columbus Crew play some of the best football in MLS and Wilfried Nancy is one of the league’s most impressive coaches.

The team ranks highest in FotMob’s team ratings with a score of 7.11 across the season, ahead of last season’s champion Los Angeles FC and 2023 league leaders FC Cincinnati.

It boasts the highest average possession in the league (57%) which is a reflection of its ball-playing and buildup style.

But to make all of this count, a cutting edge is needed at the top end of the field, and Columbus has this too as the highest-scoring team in MLS in 2023.

This is where former Watford striker Cucho comes in. A hat-trick in the 4-2 win against Montreal this week took him to 12 goals in total for the season and nine in MLS.

A diving header, a left-footed finish from close range and a right-footed penalty made the hat-trick a perfect one.

Cucho also scored three in three in the recent Leagues Cup tournament, also adding two assists, and if he can continue that kind of goalscoring return, Columbus will secure a home tie in round one of the playoffs and have as good a chance as anyone in the mix for the MLS Cup.

Any team would miss the playmaking skills of Lucas ZelarayĂĄn, who left Columbus for Saudi Pro League club Al-Fateh at the end of July, but Columbus has continued impressively even in his absence with three wins in four since his departure.

Kai Wagner 9.5 (Philadelphia Union)

Philadelphia Union’s creative left-back was at it again, registering a hat-trick of assists in his side’s 4-1 drubbing of New York Red Bulls.

Perhaps surprisingly, this collection of assists in one game took him to just five assists in total this season, but he looks to be making his creativity count at the right time as the post-season approaches.

Wagner created more chances than any other player during this summer’s Leagues Cup and has now continued that form into the league.

In this game, there was one assist from a corner, another from a free kick, and one from open play. It showed his all-round ability and supreme delivery with his left foot that makes him one of the best left-backs in the league and shows why there is always interest from Europe.

Christian Benteke 9.2 (DC United)

Like Cucho, Benteke is a striker who makes a massive difference to his team’s fortunes when he’s firing in front of goal.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa man is third in the league for total xG with 11.6, behind Brian White and Hany Mukhtar.

It is this type of goal threat that has helped propel DC from one of the worst in the league last season to one that is challenging for a playoff spot under head coach Wayne Rooney.

In Matchday 30’s 4-0 win against Chicago Fire, Benteke was assisting as well as scoring.

He held the ball up brilliantly before setting up Ted Ku-DiPietro for DC’s second.

Mateusz Klich had provided a great assist for Benteke’s first which slotted home cooly before the Belgian caused havoc for the Chicago defence resulting in an own goal.

His and DC’s performance was rounded off with a tap-in at the far post that was more difficult than it looked with the first-time finish from a narrow angle.

Promising signs for DC, Benteke, and Rooney.

Alan Pulido 9.0 (Sporting Kansas City)

This new rivalry with 2023 expansion side St. Louis City is obviously not going to be the easiest of home matches for Sporting KC given how the away fans travel in numbers and make their presence felt, but the hosts came through with a result thanks in no small part to Pulido.

The Mexican’s first-half brace led to a 2-1 win in which his team came back from a goal down and held onto the lead throughout the second half.

They were two reassuringly composed finishes, giving the rest of the team confidence that if they create, this man can finish.

Pulido is quietly making his way up the goalscoring charts. Now with 12 goals to his name in MLS in 2023, he is just two off top scorer Hany Mukhtar and has a better per 90 record than the others around him in this chart.

Sporting KC remains disappointingly outside the playoff spots while their rivals top the Western Conference, but showed here the team has the ability to make a late-season push to qualify for the postseason.

Lionel Messi 8.8 (Inter Miami)

Messi’s ability to change a game with his creativity as well as his goals was evident in the US Open Cup semi-final game against FC Cincinnati.

He dragged his team back into that tie with two world-class deliveries that were just as impressive as any of his wondergoals.

He was in this kind of mood again as Inter Miami travelled to Los Angeles FC and recorded a 3-1 win.

As might be expected in this particular city, celebrities were out in force, and though the dignitaries might have wanted the Messi name to end up on the scoresheet, they were still treated to a standard Messi masterclass even without that.

His pass to Jordi Alba for the first goal was sublime, and he pounced on some poor LAFC defending to add another assist to make sure of the win.

Premier League Matchday 4 Team of the Week

Premier League Matchday 4 Team of the Week

There were so many decent showings throughout matchday four in the Premier League that we could’ve had two Team of the Week XIs. And no, that isn’t an exaggeration. So who made the cut this week?

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker wasn’t too busy in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa but he did make a big save at 2-0, palming Matty Cash’s powerful header away from close range. The Brazilian shot-stopper made three saves on the day and managed to impress in possession. He found a teammate with 97% of his passes while also completing three of his four attempted long passes to round off a good day between the sticks.

Right-Back: Trent Alexander-Arnold

After a few shaky displays over recent weeks, the Liverpool right-back looked back to his brilliant best. He captained the side in place of the suspended Virgil van Dijk and he seemed to relish the added pressure. The No.66 created five chances, one big chance, all while finishing the game with a pass success rate of 91%. It is no coincidence that his best showing of the campaign was also the first game of the season that the Reds have completely controlled. JĂŒrgen Klopp will be hopeful that the hamstring injury he picked up isn’t as bad as it could be and he’s fit enough for the trip to Wolves after the international break. In the form he showed against Villa, he’s irreplaceable.

Centre-Back: Cristian Romero

The 25-year-old Argentine was one of many Spurs players to really catch the eye during the 5-2 win over Burnley. He was brilliant in possession, finishing the game having completed 92% of his passes, while also winning three of his four ground duels and all four of his aerial duels. In fact, no player on the pitch completed more passes than the centre-back (68). He’s really adapted to life under Ange Postecoglou. He capped off this performance with a goal, his second of the season.

Centre-Back: Kurt Zouma

Zouma scored what turned out to be the winner for West Ham against Luton. The 28-year-old put in an impressive showing against tough opposition on his way to a FotMob rating of 8.5. He won seven of his 10 aerial duels and two of his three ground duels while also making 11 clearances. Dominant defensively and composed in possession, he finished the game with a pass success rate of 88%.

Left-Back: Destiny Udogie

Udogie has been one of the revelations of the season. He’s made the left-back position his own under Postecoglou and the 20-year-old is thriving. Against Burnley, he chipped in with an assist and completed 93% of his passes, highlighting just how comfortable he is in possession. Udogie also completed all of his attempted dribbles, won 80% of his tackles, 89% of his ground duels and recovered the ball on 14 occasions.

Centre-Midfield: James Ward-Prowse

Another game, another goal involvement for the new West Ham No.7. Ward-Prowse finished with an assist in the win over Luton to make it three assists and a goal in his first three outings for the club. The 28-year-old was brilliant in the heart of the Hammers midfield, attempting 75 passes and completing 89% while also completing 100% of his dribbles and finding a teammate with 62% of his long passes. Defensively, he was robust, winning six of his eight duels.

Centre-Midfield: Manor Solomon

The 24-year-old was drafted into the starting XI to replace Richarlison, with Heung-Min Son leading the line for the game against Burnley. It was an inspired tactical tweak by Postecoglou. Solomon assisted two goals and created the most chances of the game (5). He was also successful with three of his five dribbles while also taking two shots. As far as first starts for a new club go, this one is right up there. Richarlison might struggle to get back into the XI if this sort of form from the former Fulham man is the norm.

Centre-Midfield: Pedro Neto

Though Wolves lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace, Neto really caught the eye. The 23-year-old is looking back to his best after an injury-hit 2022/23 campaign. He created three chances at Selhurst Park, two big chances, and finished with two assists. Neto also had three shots, proving himself to be an outlet for the away side throughout. He has the potential to be a real difference-maker for Wolves and Gary O’Neil would be wise to build the attacking side of things around the Portuguese winger.

Centre-Forward: Heung-Min Son

Heading into the game against Burnley, Son was without a goal in the Premier League this season. He’s now on three after a clinical performance at Turf Moor. The Spurs captain had five shots, scored a hat-trick and created a chance in what was a complete performance in a new centre-forward role. The 31-year-old led the line well and was a constant menace throughout. With Spurs now stacked in wider areas following the deadline day arrival of Brennan Johnson, this might be the No.7’s new position on a more permanent basis.

Centre-Forward: Evan Ferguson

Ferguson was the game-changer for Brighton in their 3-1 win over Newcastle United. The 18-year-old netted his first Premier League hat-trick and impressed with his general play. For example, he was tidy in possession and completed 94% of his passes. He completed 100% of his dribbles, won 75% of his ground duels and 100% of his aerial duels. Ferguson took his first goal well, caught Nick Pope out with his second and then had a slice of well-deserved luck for this third. He’s now on 10 Premier League goals in just a little over 1,100 minutes since making his debut last season.

Centre-Forward: Erling Haaland

The Manchester City No.9 had the least touches (17) of any outfield player to play 90 minutes. Yet he finished with a hat-trick and an assist to yet again make the point that, sometimes, less is more. Haaland had four shots and created two chances as he helped the champions to a 5-1 win over Fulham. They’re the only team to still have a 100% record in the English top-flight and the treble at the Etihad takes Haaland to the top of the goal charts with six in his first four matches.

Premier League Matchday Four Review

Premier League Matchday Four Review

The final round of fixtures before the international break did not disappoint. It was a goal filled matchday four with a number of hat-tricks to cap off some impressive showings. Here’s a look at some of the main talking points.

By Sam McGuire, Premier League expert

The Blades are blunted by the Toffees

Everton finally got their first goals of the season. Sean Dyche’s men also picked up their first point of the season. Sheffield United also got off the mark for the campaign with this 2-2 draw.

In truth, it probably should’ve been all three points for the away side though. They had more opportunities (16 shots to 13), more big chances (four to three) and had a superior Expected Goals total (2.59 to 1.19).

Having said that, the hosts almost won it right at the end though, with Jordan Pickford pulling off two ridiculous saves in added time to go from zero to hero for the Toffees following his first half own goal.

A statement showing from Spurs

Pre-match conversations centred around Ange Postecoglou’s decision to drop Richarlison for the visit to Burnley. The new Spurs manager opted to have captain Heung-Min Son lead the line with Manor Solomon coming into the team on the left side of the attack.

It is safe to say it paid off. Solomon created the most chances in the match (5) while Son scored his first goals of the season. The Spurs No.7 eventually finished the match with a hat-trick as he put on a finishing clinic.

Burnley had opportunities but simply couldn’t deal with the Tottenham forwards. It highlighted how ruthless things are in the Premier League.

Stamford Bridge stunned

The Mauricio Pochettino era at Chelsea continues to stutter. The Blues have won just one of their four matches this season and suffered a second loss of the campaign, going down 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.

If we’re being honest, it was a smash and grab result. The hosts, once again, dominated the ball with 76% possession but failed to make the most of their opportunities. Chelsea had 21 shots, three big chances and had an Expected Goal haul of 2.3.

However, Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling weren’t able to convert their chances in the same manner Nottingham Forest’s summer signing Anthony Elanga did just minutes into the second half, when he calmly passed the ball into the corner of Robert SĂĄnchez’s goal.

Manchester City keep their record alive

We witnessed yet another Erling Haaland hat-trick on Saturday. The Manchester City No.9 was at his best against Fulham in the 5-1 win for the 2022/23 treble winners, also assisting a goal. His numbers from this match are remarkable when you consider he had four shots and created two chances despite having just 17 touches at the Etihad.

The champions are the only team in the league with a 100% record. At one stage, though, Fulham had drawn level through Tim Ream just two minutes after City had taken the lead.

Nathan Ake’s controversial goal on the stroke of halftime turned the tide and the away side just never recovered. JuliĂĄn Álvarez also got in on the act, scoring the opener before Haaland ran riot after the break.

The Seagulls soar over the Magpies

This was the Evan Ferguson show as Brighton ran out 3-1 winners over Newcastle United. The 18-year-old finished with a 100% shot accuracy on his way to scoring a hat-trick. He also completed 94% of his passes and was successful with 100% of his dribbles.

Brighton got back to winning ways after the shock defeat to West Ham last weekend and looked assured and composed throughout. Newcastle, on the other hand, have now lost three consecutive matches and looked exposed in defence without the injured Sven Botman. They’ve also looked a little blunt in attack ever since their 5-1 win over Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the season. It is something for Eddie Howe to ponder over the international break.

Laying down a marker

The pressure was on Arsenal heading into their match against Manchester United. The Gunners had drawn their last outing, a 2-2 draw with Fulham, and they couldn’t afford to drop points at the Emirates again.

They responded well to going behind with Martin Odegaard levelling things up just 35 seconds after Marcus Rashford had fired the visitors ahead.

Alejandro Garnacho thought he’d won it for the Red Devils late on but his goal was ruled out for offside.

AndrĂ© Onana was then beaten in added time by Declan Rice before Gabriel Jesus added an exclamation point with a third. It was completely deserved. Mikel Arteta’s men finished with an Expected Goals total of 2.27 having had 55% of the ball.

Bukayo Saka didn’t score but he did claim an assist and he finished the game having created five chances for the Gunners.
