What to watch for today
Denmark v. France | Group C
France are already through to the Round of 16 and appear to be set to rotate their lineup for this match to give more squad members a chance to make a case for more minutes. A draw would be enough for Denmark, although they could still go through with a loss as long as their two goal advantage in goal difference isn’t undone.
Australia v. Peru | Group C
Australia still has a chance to get out of the group despite earning just one point in their first two matches. First, they need to take care of their own business and beat Peru, then hope the Danes lose, and overcome a two goal gap in goal difference in the process. The Socceroos’ only two goals so far have been from penalties awarded from handballs, but they’ll likely need to stay compact again to avoid going behind. Peru are already out after losing both of their matches, but can count on intense support from the stands for their final match.
Nigeria v. Argentina | Group D
Nigeria’s win over Iceland gave Argentina hope. Now Messi & co. can still go through if they beat Nigeria and Iceland beats Croatia. The fallout from Argentina’s 3-0 defeat continued throughout the week with a player-organized “crisis meeting” and rumours of infighting. They enter this match with a lot to play for, but no shortage of tumult and pressure. Nigeria have had a mixed bag so far; an uninspiring 2-0 loss to Croatia, followed by an electric display against Iceland. A draw would be enough to confirm they go through.
Iceland v. Croatia | Group D
Croatia qualified for the knockouts with their 3-0 defeat of Argentina and will likely change up their starting 11. Iceland still have a shot at going through, but it’s complicated: Iceland and Argentina both need to win and Iceland needs to maintain their superior goal difference over Argentina.
